Why Havok should NOT be involved with Polaris

salarta:

It’s time I made a post about a very important topic: why Polaris should not be interacting with Havok at all right now, especially not in any kind of romantic sense.

Before I go into detail, I’ll just say: I obviously have no creative control over what companies do. I have no control over what people tell companies that they want to see. I’m not the sole arbiter of what can and can’t be done with Polaris. And frankly, no one person should fit that bill. It limits options.

However, I know, for a fact, that shoving Havok into things Polaris is doing will absolutely ruin her. No amount of promotion for her on Gifted, or with a cover for X-Men Blue, or anything else, is going to matter if it all gets funneled into putting Havok on a pedestal and establishing Havok as “better” than her.

The history I’m about to describe explains all of this, and why I can be so absolutely certain Havok is terrible for her.

This post bears repeating.

‘Discuss the episode’ thing you did was ages ago but if you’re up for it, maybe you could talk about ‘all hell breaks lose’? I read someone saying years ago how the episode was set up so that it looked like any of the sisters could’ve died and it would be interesting to see your take on it

All Hell Breaks Loose is probably one of the most intense and terrifying Charmed episodes of the early seasons (and probably of the series as a whole). While the ending definitely sets it up to look like any of the three sisters could die (and Prue actually dying makes the ending that much more intense and heartbreaking) what’s scarier about the episode is the mob mentality shown and the harsh reality of what would happen if the Charmed Ones existed in the real world.

For three seasons we’ve seen the Charmed Ones hide who they despite wanting, at various times, to reveal their true identities to others. We’ve previously seen two love interests learn The Secret and neither reacted particularly well (although Andy did eventually come to accept the supernatural world). All Hell Breaks Loose answers the question of what would happen if the Charmed Ones were exposed and the ensuing chaos is both realistic and terrifying.

Humans do not react well to the unknown. Whether said reactions come out in the form of anger, aggression, fear or blind adulation, we do not handle the unknown well at all and All Hell Breaks Loose is a beautiful portrayal of this. Once exposed, the sisters hide in the Manor while their front lawn is flooded with people eliciting every single one of previously listed emotions and it’s horrifying and terrifying and only emphasizes why the sisters need to remain hidden, only revealing themselves to individuals when necessary. I’m reminded of a quote from the film Men In Black “A person is smart. People are stupid”. En masse, humans are panicky, hysterical and feed off one another’s fear and this episode illustrates this.

The sisters’ reactions to being exposed are interesting, especially as the episode escalates. While they initially don’t show much concern, with Piper even trying to take things in stride and joking about which talk show they should appear on, things take a turn for the worse very quickly and we see all the sisters start to show extreme concern for their own well-being, reaching out to Daryl for help and even turning to the Elders who, once again, prove their uselessness by refusing to help.

The Elders are very much like the Watchers Council in BtVS. They basically sit around on their butts and spout useless drivel while refusing to actually help when they can. There is absolutely no reason for them to not intervene here, especially since the reveal of magic threatens them as well as the sisters. Their reply of “clean up your own mess” is cruel, patronizing and dangerous and it lends weight to the theory that Prue created The Cleaners from the Beyond in order to make sure her sisters would never face this sort of hysteria again.

The climax of the episode is terrifying and heartbreaking, as Piper is shot by an over-zealous “fan” and Prue is forced to use her magic on the crowd outside the Manor. Prue’s desperation as she tries to drive out of her own driveway is horrifying and all-too-real, as she desperately implores the hysterical mob to move, eventually being forced to resort to her powers, which only makes the situation worse, as it alerts the authorities to the dangers of her powers and only seems to confirm the worst about the sisters to the public.

Piper’s death is devastating, especially since at this point in the series the sisters haven’t died all that often and so death scenes still have an emotional impact. Prue’s cold fury in the aftermath of Piper’s death is chilling (this is truly one of Shannen’s best episodes) and the snipers almost getting her (only for her to die anyway later on) is nail-bitingly suspenseful.

This is one of Charmed’s best episodes, showcasing the horror and terror of mass hysteria and putting the sister through their most harrowing experience to date. Intense from start to finish, All Hell Breaks Loose refuses to let up, taking the audience on a wild and terrifying ride which ends in utter heartbreak.

i think that this is the best way i’ve ever seen this episode described and its perfect

Tweetin time. I’m listening to the new Vicious album by Halestorm as I write this up, which I highly suggest listening to cause it’s awesomesauce.

This tweet got the date wrong; #49 came out in October 1968. But. This tweet itself is wonderful and important just for the attempt to acknowledge Lorna and when she first appeared.

This is canon now cause I say so.

Okay, okay. Honestly, bi fits her more. But personally I’d be fine with this too.

Also I like the dig on Havok because I’m sick as fuck of Lorna getting dragged down to promote his stories and put him on a pedestal. And I’d say the number of retweets and likes for this tweet says something in itself.

For those who don’t know, comphet means compulsory heterosexuality, as in someone acting heterosexual because society expects them to be.

A few more cases of people saying they’d want a Polaris solo already goddamnit Marvel stop refusing to do good things.

A couple cases of Lorna listed as a character that should be included in X-Men rosters.

Two more tweets about wanting her to be in Future Fight. It’s getting old that she keeps getting excluded for no good reason whatsoever.

There were a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of responses to the second one that included Lorna in their top 10. I’m only posting this one case because to post all the responses including Lorna could’ve taken up a post all by itself.

Plus even before the responses, the fact Lorna was included in the picture kicking off the thread says a lot.

This tweet demonstrates how bad this cover was in the way it presented Lorna. Months have passed and views have very much not changed.

First tweet was for aesthetics of favorite characters. Second tweet was a series of Magnus family aesthetics.

On that note, more people talking about the idea of Lorna and Wanda fighting – an idea I’ve absolutely backed before. But the key to a fight is having actual emotional stakes and playing on their being sisters, not just having them fight for the hell of it.

Also stands out to me that they chose to use a pic of comics Lorna (in this case, Jeff Parker’s Exiles) instead of Gifted’s live action interpretation to match with the MCU Wanda pic.

Another case of fancasting an MCU version of Lorna, this time with Lorna as black. IMO I think she’d be a great fit of known actresses, but I still feel an “unknown” actress would fit better.

And wanting Lorna in the MCU again.

image

One of my headcanons is Lorna having a moment very akin to Wanda’s House of M tied to the trauma she’s gone through, getting pushed too far, etc. I think this shows a lot of people feel the same way in wanting something similar.

Another tweet about how Lorna’s Jewish ancestry, and how it doesn’t really come up much in use of her.

Various Lorna appreciation. I increasingly love Lorna referred to as queen. In her original storyline, she was called Queen of Mutants by Mesmero and followers. Going back to that would be great.

And for my final highlight tweets, two people talking about how Lorna deserves way, way more use and respect than Marvel is willing to give her.
