quicksilverfans:

Given this is a story of kid-Wolverine as the hero, he’d probably win this fight, but if we’re actually comparing fighting powers, then Quicksilver would win, not just because he’s my favorite, but as was clearly established in previous issues of this story, Pietro can use anything as a bullet. Kid-Wolverine on the other hand can only fight Pietro from up close, that is if he’s able to catch him….I bitch a lot about writers making Quicksilver lose to less powerful but more popular characters.

I think the most important part in any situation is that if a character loses, it has to be set up in such a way that it looks believable they’d lose. It has to be presented in a manner where their defeat is fair, that it looks like it happened for reasons other than “X character is more popular” or “this writer just wanted this character to win.”

Magneto #20/Inferno #3/Starlord & Kitty Pryde Thoughts

Guys, I slipped. I thought Starlord & Kitty Pryde was coming out next week, and only just discovered it came out this week. I also never got around to sharing my thoughts on Inferno #3, and I need to do a better rundown of my thoughts on Magneto #20 now that the things I had worried about were (thankfully) proven wrong.

Magneto #20

I said this with the previews, but it was really cool that Magneto posited the thought that another version of him may exist in the other universe, and may be acting against him. We already know that version of him is dead, but Magneto doesn’t know that, and it’s a great introduction to showing he has a limited POV compared to the reader.

Briar looks a lot more cunning in this art, which I think is the biggest reason some fans theorized she could have been Mystique. It was an interesting theory among the ones out there on who Briar could be, though I’m honestly glad she turned out to still be her own unique character.

Lorna telling Magneto he can stop fighting is… awkward to me, but I can definitely see her saying that out of concern he could kill himself with too much strain. It shows she’s aware that he’s in a self-sacrificial state of mind.

The issue also does a good job of representing all the big players from the solo, and including Lorna in the mix. There’s a definite “home stretch” feeling from it.

And Lorna looks amazing in her dress. I’d love to see this one as a cosplay some day, but I have a feeling that’ll never happen. I’m still not quite sure what to think of all the people missing limbs, showing scars, etc at a party to celebrate Magneto; it seems kind of strange. For me, personally, it stretches believability, but I could just be missing something important.

And then, of course, the end. Before Magneto #20, I was worried she might get killed off; after it released, I was worried she might’ve been depowered. Thankfully, neither were true, but my kneejerk response at the time was extremely unfair.

Draining Lorna to use her power instead of Lorna having to bear any of it is definitely something Magneto would do. He’s had a long history of thinking he’s doing the right thing by withholding information from Lorna and doing things that may feel like betrayal, but he thinks are in their best interest.

In all, Magneto #20 was a great read, and I’m looking forward to Magneto #21.

Inferno #3

There was no indication Polaris would be in this one, so I didn’t find out until after the issue already released. I still managed to read it digitally. Forgive me if I say something wrong, as I’m jumping right in the middle and not entirely aware of the entire backdrop.

Colossus’ eagerness to save his sister comes across well with the demons on the stairs and busting down the door. It’s interesting to see this Havok around given the character history, too. Domino seems a lot more strategic than Colossus, which I get the feeling is meant to suggest Colossus might have been more successful on past attempts to save Illyana if he’d been more strategic that way.

Artist did an excellent job with what I assume to be an attempt at a “Whore of Babylon” play. I think that one deserves kudos to the writer and artist. As far as Madelyne Pryor goes… I disagree with the complaints that led to her underboob getting covered. What matters is context and how well it fits the character. Madelyne’s the type that’s shown she enjoys such displays. I’d complain if it was out of character for her to show underboob and made her look bad, but it fits her history and doesn’t tear her down. She’s a very sensual type.

I’m happy that while all the X-Men are wearing about the same uniform, Lorna has a green glow and her headdress to remain close to her iconic look. Got Strong Guy there too as an homage to X-Factor.

At the end, Mister Sinister looks a lot more gruff than I’m familiar with for his 616 counterpart. It’s a neat spin for the work he does.

Star-Lord & Kitty Pryde

There are a LOOOOT of cool cameos mixed into the very first page. It does something you really don’t see much of, one of the things I praised Peter David for when it happened in bits and pieces on ANXF: seeing characters in their everyday downtime. We get a lot of the big stuff, which is important, but it’s also nice just to see the characters being people beyond that.

That said, part of me wishes Lorna used her powers to play the guitar; but I can see her wanting to do it naturally too. Still, imagine what music tricks she could pull using both hands and powers.

It’s great that we get a brief summary of Battleworld and how Starlord ended up where he is, for people (like me) who haven’t been reading the major books. Thumbs up any time that happens. The commentary with this world’s Drax also helps to establish that characters may be much different from the 616 ones people know.

Holy hell Kitty Pryde’s dress looks gorgeous.

I just realized I’ve devolved into this.

Holy shit, knives crafted from Longshot’s bones? God Doom doesn’t mess around, huh?

There’s also this picture I haven’t seen make the rounds.

I don’t have much else I can think to say, other than that this is another interesting use of X-Factor, but overall pretty good issue. Hoping Lorna gets to play a bit more in future issues. 🙂

For people that don’t know me too well: I put out a lot of theories, on all sorts of things, based on what I’ve seen happen and how I project things may turn out based on that history. It’s a precautionary measure, it helps you prepare for if it really happens.

Most of the time, those theories are right, but there are times where they turn out to be completely, utterly wrong. I WANT the theories where something bad might happen to things I care about to be wrong.

One of those cases has happened: I was wrong about my fear that Lorna might be killed off during Magneto #20, and also wrong that she might have been depowered.

http://cullenbunn.tumblr.com/post/124917912489/i-read-magneto-correctly-didnt-i-magneto-didnt

And because I was wrong, I want to emphatically say both thank you for proving me wrong, and sorry for any and all posts I’ve made over the past few months with those theories.

Now that we know Lorna’s safe, and I was wrong, I’ll refrain from the theories and try to be more trusting that Marvel will treat her right. I was on edge because of many things, especially the forced retcon on Wanda and Pietro out of being Magneto’s kids, and this gives me reason to hope again.

I read Magneto correctly didn’t I? Magneto didn’t steal Polaris powers he just used her as a battery so her powers are still there she will just need to recharge. It would just be disappointing if Polaris lost her powers again, like mind control that particular storyline for that character has been done to death.

Yep… You read it correctly!

Magneto Dark Seduction

Thank you for answering this! This makes me feel much, much better about Lorna’s future. Magneto’s language read to me like it could have meant siphoned or completely depowered.

I expected the worst, not from you but from broader company plans, and it’s a huge relief to see I was absolutely wrong. I will try to have more faith in the future. Thanks again.

I’ve had a lot to think about over the past week.

I’ll just come right out and say it: receiving abuse over things I care about is not new to me. I’ve been dealing with it for years.

When I complained about Final Fantasy 13 around the time it released, many people attacked me – including one guy who actually said he wished my parents were Jews that died during the Holocaust.

While GamerGate’s been going on, I’ve seen them doxx, threaten, harass and smear so many innocent people – insisting one person was a rapist, insisting another person had sex for game reviews, insisting yet another person has sex with dogs. Any time it looked like there was a risk of me becoming a “big player” opposed to their abuse, they swarmed me with accusations and flat out lies about me.

Many of those same people followed me on Twitter when GamerGate started, to try to “inform” me of the “truth” – followed by trying to wear me down by repeatedly insisting I was stupid or naive, calling me “retarded” (horrible slur no decent person should ever use, by the way) and similar things.

I’ve had so much more than that aimed at me, for so many reasons, and it all boils down to one thing: they see me as a threat, and they want to ruin me or tear me down because attacking the messenger is easier than refuting the message.

It also always comes with loaded language. Abusers try to paint themselves as the victim, and try to de-legitimize the person they’re targeting. When I complained about Final Fantasy 13, people that didn’t want me to complain insisted I wasn’t a “true Final Fantasy fan”… even though Final Fantasy, with all the heart and soul Hironobu Sakaguchi poured into it, has meant so much to me since I was a child. When GamerGate attacks people they don’t like or see as a threat to their agenda, they insist their targets “aren’t real gamers”… while promoting people like Jack Thompson who have tried to get video games banned, and celebrating the idea that GamerGate might have caused some universities not to fund academic study or archival efforts in video games.

In cases like GamerGate, you even have people that actively tout how they’re going to “use the SJWs’ language against them.”

In a sense, I’ve been lucky and naive – I haven’t faced that kind of abuse for my support of Polaris until now.

And I don’t know, maybe this time the attempt at a smear job on me will succeed, but that really doesn’t matter. Polaris is worth suffering through this kind of abuse. As long as I break the cycle that’s kept her from being acknowledged and used for her value and potential for the past four (going on five) decades, it’ll all be worth it. I’ll be happy just to see that for all the slings and arrows aimed at me, Lorna’s getting cosplay, getting fanart, getting fanfic, and maybe some day will get to be the big part of the Marvel universe she should be.

I’m also going to ask that if you think some fan work isn’t getting enough spread because I posted it, or even if you don’t like me personally or think reblogging me will cause problems you don’t want, then please make a new post of it. You don’t have to attribute me with it anywhere, all that matters is that it gets out there and helps the fandom grow. I know how powerful fiction can be. Lorna has more value and potential than anyone can imagine, and she deserves the best she can get.

Magneto #20 Review

twilt-dreams:

I’m back folks, or rather I never left. There just hasn’t been much in the comic world that’s interested me with Secret Wars. But I still read Magneto and some secrets are coming out in what I think is the second-to-last issue of his own series. So read on my review of Magneto # 20!

Good review, thanks for posting.

I’m concerned it’s possible that the comic intends for Magneto to have depowered Lorna, but right now it’s inconclusive whether she was depowered or simply had power siphoned from her. There’s more of a history for the siphon theory, but some of the wording comes off like it could be more than that.

I’ll be interested to see if Cullen Bunn’s thought of an outcome that’s different from what people are expecting, when it comes to whether or not Magneto failed.

Firstly You need to stop harassing my blog. I’m not Logan Alpha who ever the hell that is. That person is just another one like you and JM247 who like to downgrade Polaris. Funny cause I thought you were JMC247. If you haven’t been there since, but your posts are still there It doesn’t go away. For your information, I don’t have an account in CBR, but I do have one in Comic Vine name’s Azalae in case if you want to know more. Also, I only have one account here and I am not Dechra (but I can assure you she is a nice person unlike you) just because we both defend Polaris while you and JMC247 downgrade her doesn’t mean I’m everyone who love Polaris. Now that’s being insane. I guess that would make us the true fans and ya a hypocrites because honestly, ya are Storm’s fans.

Also, my discussing has nothing to do with you, but if you feel offended, then, you know who you are.

You keep saying the same shit, but I see you’re not saying anything about why you keep downgrading Polaris. Why you find everything wrong with what Marvel does to Polaris. Why you took the bad images out because it’s true that you are  like those from CBR. I noticed you didn’t even bother saying why you said Marvel should have never gave Lorna the code name POLARIS. I thought that was the best name Marvel ever gave to Lorna. Polaris and not Magnetrix. It’s like saying “Why they didn’t name Ororo Munroe tornado”. lol

You can say what ever cause everyone here already know where you are coming from. I can see you in another account checking on my blogs and my discussing toward the character you “love” Like I said, I never bother in your discussing because I’m not interested ESPECIALLY when all you do is take credit away from Polaris and downgrading her characterization. You are a disgrace as a Polaris fan.

Goodbye and glad this is over.

Why in the name of all that is holy are you attacking me? What did I do kill your puppy? Yes I feel Lorna during the Claremont era was shit. It was not too bad for the first 7 years or so of Claremont’s run on Uncanny where she was just a B lister temp X-Men sometimes and sometimes mind controlled villain, but she was completely disassembled as a character after it was clear she and the other X-Men in Uncanny 146 weren’t going to get their own X-Men West Coast team which almost happened.

Claremont did good work with her in her 2000 run when he was writing part of her story arc on Genosha. He got into a bad spiril with Lorna in the 80s and start of the 90s and things kept getting worse until the point where he decided she would be Mistress of Magnetism no more and would have new powers and a new code name.

I love Claremont as a writer keep that in bloody mind and I met the man in person more then once. Great writers can do terrible things to characters and terrible writers can do great things to characters… the world isn’t so simple.

I never liked OP and seems as though they are incapable of creating coherent paragraphs and are willing to police other fans on the validity of how much of a fan they are. FYI Salarta and JMC are huge Polaris fans who are also critical of the comics so they’re not always gonna be like hooray Polaris was allowed to exist.

Seriously, guy tried to pass off a deliberate and obvious smear job of me as a “review,” went on to claim that I shouldn’t complain he’s doing it, then decided to make this new separate post so he could keep at it once I blocked him.

I mean yeah, of course I’m upset. If someone shows up outside your home essentially saying to anyone that passes by “if you see a guy that looks like this and says any of these things, he’s a sex offender and he kicks puppies for fun,” most people are going to be upset.

Thanks for your replies kurt, it means a lot as it may become necessary to do more to keep the cycle that’s held Lorna back for so long from repeating this time.
