From what I’ve seen personally so far, greeenly is someone who’s failing to give attribution when he/she should. That’s a lot different from an art thief, who deliberately tries to make people think someone else’s work is their own. What I’ve seen so far looks like a simple case of a fan who wants to share stuff they like but doesn’t grasp how important it is to show respect for the person or people who made it.

If I’m mistaken and greeenly HAS tried to claim ownership of a cosplay, piece of art, fanfic, etc they didn’t make, then please link me if possible. I’ve had people do that to me with fics I wrote, I know how shitty it is to have something you put so much work into stolen by someone who’s too lazy to put work in to get the praise they want.

That’s also why I’m making this a public post. I always thought it was obvious that greeenly was only posting work they liked without attribution, not claiming it to be their own, but I think it’s worth a public post for anyone who may not realize it.

For the moment, I’m going to treat it as just a fan making the innocent mistake of lacking attribution. It’s a mistake I made a lot when I started out, so it’s hard for me to malign a person for things it took me some time to learn.

It’s an interesting thought exercise in the narrative of the Magneto solo that some of his fictional fans are that obsessed with him. Fandom can lead to some really dark place in the real world too, and it’s gotten more intense over the past few years. There isn’t really anything official out there that’s taking the time to explore it, at least that I’ve seen.

Another core difference is that whereas the fictional Magneto fans are devoted in the form of self-harm and acting excessively prideful of how they were hurt, real world toxic fandom seems to be more along the lines of trying to gatekeep fandom with smears and attacks. I only just realized how bad it’s getting a few months ago, after the past year of witnessing how GamerGate keeps trying to ruin innocent people’s lives over their perception of “true fandom”.
