I’m actually a little surprised Marvel finally caught on to this matter and acted before it was too late.
The original choice to list the two Avengers films as a two-parter was something I fully expected would kill interest in the MCU all on its own. What works so well with the MCU is how each film is stand-alone, yet they’re all loosely tied together. If you don’t want to watch Guardians of the Galaxy, you don’t have to.
The two-parter approach screws up that style a few ways. It forces people into a commitment of more time and money if they want the whole story. The first film essentially gives you an idea of what you can expect with the next one, meaning there’s much less “new” about it. A year’s gap is ample time for people to lose interest in the story/characters, and forget what happened in the first film.
The formula of multi-parters only really worked for things like Hunger Games and Lord of the Rings because they’re based on books. Book-based movies are a beast all their own.
Now that they’re not really retitling the films, but splitting them to seem more separate, I’m not sure about my original prediction that the MCU would be dead by 2020. There have been several problems along the way, like failure to make Black Widow merchandise or the race matter in Dr. Strange casting, but I don’t know if they’re big enough issues on their own.
I haven’t talked about video games a lot on this Tumblr, so this is a moment where I do that.
Patrice Desilets started 1666 Amsterdam at THQ Montreal. In his agreement with THQ, it was stated that if the company decided not to make the game, its rights would return to Desilets. A few years ago, THQ entered bankruptcy and got bought by Ubisoft. Desilets and Ubisoft had a rocky relationship from when he worked for them before, and though they tried to work together briefly, they split again.
At that point, Ubisoft put 1666 on “indefinite hold” for development. It was a blatant move to keep Desilets from getting the rights back to his own IP. By not actually canceling the game, but also not doing any work on it, Ubisoft could “punish” Desilets within the letter but not the spirit of the contract.
Today, Ubisoft FINALLY gave Desilets the rights back to his own IP.
What that means for me is I can buy Ubisoft games again. I’d been refusing to buy Ubisoft games until they did the right thing and returned the rights to Desilets, and it finally happened.
The main one I’m looking forward to playing is Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. I’m really looking forward to playing as Evie, especially the Jack the Ripper DLC. I’ve heard great things. I’d buy it at full price if the game just came out, but because it’s been 6 months, I’m going to wait until it’s on sale. I feel like I’d be stupid and getting cheated if I didn’t wait.
I heard Watch Dogs is okay, worth playing if it’s $10-15. Far Cry is a maybe. I suddenly remember Child of Light as well. There’s probably other games I’ve forgotten that I’ll get and play.
ya’ll really don’t want to this movie to make any money do you lmao
yikes
so are they gonna remove all vulnerable minority groups whose inclusion would upset their overseas markets?
Any use of the words “social justice warrior” in a genuine, sincere way is an instant red flag case, in the same way as words like “shitlord,” “neckbeard” and “pissbaby.” I was really hoping use of “social justice warrior” here was the news writer trying to summarize the screenwriter’s words with a clickbait title, but nope. He actually said it.
I’m really glad right now that I stopped watching the MCU as soon as Marvel forced their retcon on Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver being Magneto’s kids. It spares me from feeling like I might miss anything by not seeing Dr. Strange.
I swear by all the gods it’s a damn good thing I got out of NC when I did or I’d be burning down everything associated with these fucking clownshoes.
what the actual fuck, NC. What the actual fuck.
“To report suspicious bathroom activity, North Carolina residents can call the 24-hour ‘HB2 Offender Hotline’ at 1-800-662-7952. For individuals living outside of North Carolina, please call (919) 814-2000.”
Let’s spamcall the fuck out of this, please.
919-814-2050 – This is the number to the governor’s office. Call him and express your displeasure while you’re at it.
Also, I was so busy skimming the article for the numbers I didn’t actually read it.
“With the information gathered from this hotline, we’ll be working closely with local law enforcement agencies to make sure this law is enforced and those who break the law see jail bars. We are sending a clear message to all the transsexuals out there; their illegal actions and deviant behavior will no longer be tolerated in the state of North Carolina.” How in the fuck is this an actual thing that came out of the mouth of a government official? This reads like unfunny satire. It’s just flat-out bigotry. It sounds like the shit you’d hear at a Klan rally.
“We encourage North Carolina’s residents to take photographs and report as much detail as possible when calling.” Also holy SHIT the governor’s office is TELLING PEOPLE TO COMMIT A SEX CRIME. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK.
YEAH JUST GO AHEAD AND LEGALLY TAKE BATHROOM PICS OF PEOPLE THAT WON’T END BADLY.
I don’t give a shit who you are, if I see you trying to take my picture in any public bathroom, I’m breaking your face with your own goddamned phone because you’re a sick pervert.
Please correct me if this is unhelpful:
it strikes me that a useful thing for cis allies to do here would be 1) for in state allies to shut down anyone taking photos in a public bathroom and 2) for out of state allies to spam the hotline with reports that it is very suspicious the state of north carolina is spending money enforcing and running a hotline for this bigoted law when they have child poverty rate of over 25%.
Here is a script for #1):
You taking pictures in a bathroom is rude, inappropriate, and makes me feel uncomfortable. You need to put the camera away.
Whatever their response gets a broken record of, “(Well bless your sweet little heart), it is still inappropriate to take pictures of other people in a bathroom. You need to put the camera away.”
Cis people: you are not safe either. Under this law, someone can decide your voice is too high for the men’s room, your feet or your hands are too big for the ladies’, or they just don’t like you and want to make your day harder, and they will use this law against you too. If you don’t care what happens to us, think about every shitty joke you ever heard about a schoolmate or a celebrity who looked ‘too masculine’ or ‘too feminine’, and remember that not all of you can ‘pass’ as the gender you were assigned at birth.
And make no mistake, there will be more bashings. When governments pass laws like this, it tells the community bigots that society is on their side, that nobody’s gonna care what happens to a [insert slur here]. They get bolder.
If you’re cis in North Carolina and know a trans person whose bathroom of choice is the same as yours, another ally thing you could do is offer to go with them.
HOW WAS THIS NOT SHITTY SATIRE
It’s still striking to me how it’s mostly men that appear to fantasize about the idea of trans women pretending to be trans just so they can spy on women using the bathroom. AND that these men try to invoke fear of rape culture to push their trans hate agenda. It’s a double dose of assholish behavior – demanding fear of trans people and threatening women with the specter of rape and a lack of support for rape victims if hatred toward trans people isn’t supported.
I’m happy about this news, and here’s the problem with that: Disney and Marvel shouldn’t be putting me in such a position.
The Inhumans have their own, unique potential. When Polaris was out in space, Lorna spending time with Luna as auntie Lorna and helping Crystal in her rise to power were the positive bits of that time. They offered things for Polaris that couldn’t be done with the X-Men. The Inhumans franchise also has its own fans that want what they care about to get some attention.
Because Marvel is trying to tear down the X-Men franchise, and they’re using the Inhumans as a pivotal device toward that goal, they’ve turned the Inhumans into an obstacle. They’ve made people want the Inhumans to fail because success means Marvel is one step closer toward being able to do away with the X-Men completely. As long as the Inhumans franchise doesn’t succeed in its current form and treatment, Marvel can’t deny there’s a place for the X-Men to exist in the Marvel universe.
Marvel’s created a rift between two franchises that should be compatible, and have been in the past. They’ve ruined any chance of fans trusting events between them are in good faith, too, because Marvel’s spent the past half a decade deliberately dismantling the X-Men while building up the Inhumans as replacements for mutants and X-Men.
The shittiest part of all of this is that Marvel’s ruining at least the next few decades of interaction between the X-Men and Inhumans franchises because of their obsessive hate-on for Fox. And I’m being incredibly generous with the estimation of decades. The damage Marvel’s doing today may be permanent.
And it may prevent the Inhumans franchise from ever being able to reach its true potential, because Marvel’s turning them into discount X-Men. It’s forcing the Inhumans to exist in the shadow of the X-Men franchise, priming people to think “Why are they using the Inhumans when the X-Men would be better?”
Marvel’s behavior has been a disservice to both the X-Men and the Inhumans, and they both suffer as a result. Inhumans less visibly but no less severely. And really, that raises one more question: if Marvel’s so desperate to turn the Inhumans into replacement X-Men, do they have any respect for the Inhumans and their real potential at all?
I’m mainly posting this for Polaris, but I tagged the other women on the list by their codenames. Here’s the blurb for Lorna though, cause I’m selfish like that.
In one of the most depressing backstories, an infant Lorna kills her
parents in a plane crash. While they were arguing about her mother’s
affair with her birth father, Magneto, she became upset and tried to
make them stop with a magnetic pulse. That pulse brought the plane down
and she miraculously survives with newly-green hair. Drawn to her major
display of power, Magneto determines that she is not ready for mutant
life and has an associate rewrite her memories. Her aunt and uncle raise
her as their own, making her believe they were her parents. And you
thought Batman had it rough as a kid.
She is detected by Cerebro
and Iceman is sent to bring her in. He reveals what really happened with
her parents and she turns against Magneto, who–in a plot twist that
would make M. Night Shyamalan envious–ends up being a robot double. She
joins the X-Men and develops a relationship with Iceman, all while
coming into her powers and fighting in a few missions. Did we mention
her dad is Magneto? That alone warrants a solo film.
“Uncanny” shares a lead character with your previous X-Book, “Magneto.” AcesX1X wants to know more about how those books are connected.
Are there any remnants of your “Magneto” solo that you wanted to bring over to “Uncanny X-Men,” but were unable to for whatever reason?
Hey, AcesX1X. I don’t think there were any elements of “Magneto” that I was unable to bring over. There are definitely some characters – such as Briar Raleigh and Polaris and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who were chasing Magneto – that I have plans for in the series in the near future, but I have to make sure a few pieces fall into place before I introduce them.
Also, Bunn mentioned Hellfire Club will be in this, and I’m really really hoping Lorna is part of that. Nothing wrong at all if she isn’t, of course, but I’d still like it.
So, do you feel like, as a writer, it’s difficult to jump around between all of these titles? You’ve written Sinestro, Magneto, and some Deadpool, and now Drax, as well. These are all very different characters.
It can get a little dicey, every now and again. I think when I was writing the Magneto solo and the Sinestro solo it was the most difficult. I always had to keep my eye on the prize and do whatever I could to make these two books as different as possible. Sometimes it got really weird—it was never intentional, but there were things that were similar. I had an arc where Magneto was dealing with Polaris, his daughter, and there’s a lot of father-daughter tension between the two, but in Sinestro, Sinestro has been dealing with his daughter since the first issue and there’s some tension between the two of them, too. So, I had to, in some cases, lean into the differences between the two characters a little more and a little harder than I would have normally. For the most part, it’s nice to work on these different stories. When working on a story like Uncanny X-Men that has a serious plotline, it’s nice to go to a book like Drax, where we kind of rely on some humor and a big sense of fun in that series. Switching between the books can be a good palette cleanser. Or, if I get stuck on a storyline for a Deadpool story, switching gears and working on the Uncanny X-Men storyline will sometimes loosen up those roadblocks.
On that note, Bunn mentions elsewhere in the interview that Rachel Grey is his favorite mutant. This is important to consider to me because Rachel’s not on Uncanny X-Men and as far as I’m aware, isn’t currently active in the X-Men or Marvel universe.
I feel knowing this helps to emphasize Bunn’s choice of characters in Uncanny X-Men really does come down to the theme of Uncanny X-Men and which characters fit that theme.
