I’ve received a few messages about how we can’t fight against Hollywood; I’ll reply to them all here. Yes, intellectually, I know there is very little chance our small campaign will ever get big enough to influence Disney and Marvel into putting things where they belong, to stop disregarding their loyal fanbase that has been reading their comics for decades. Because the truth is, we don’t matter. Most of their money now comes from their movies, cartoons, toys, and such (which is why boycotting the movie would be a much more effective form of protest). But emotionally? We need this. We need to believe we’re not completely powerless against entertainment conglomerates and their needs, we need to believe we’re not puppets whose strings can be pulled at any moment, that we have agency and that our voices are heard. We need to believe that Marvel will acknowledge what a mess they’re making here, the same way they acknowledged what a terrible decision it was to reveal Spider-Man’s secret identity during Civil War, and similar events. Otherwise, what was the point of dedicating so much time, money, and emotional attachment to these characters?

Actually, what we do is far more powerful and important than a lot of these guys want us to think.

This is supposedly a “drop in the bucket.” But it’s not. The outrage is palpable, and even if we assumed nothing will come of this outrage, Disney won’t stop here. They never do. They’ll keep doing things exactly like this until it’s so overwhelming that they’ll either have to stop being stupid and listen to fans, or let the company slowly die.

What Disney’s doing here is the same scenario as what happened with Capcom and Square-Enix. Disrespect toward fans, greed and ego motivated changes, the works. It took Square-Enix 10 years to have it come back on them. It took Capcom only 3-4 years. It happened because stuff like this isn’t an isolated incident. Stuff like this is a symptom of a systematic problem the company has deeply ingrained into the way it operates, and the company will keep doing things just like this. It’s impossible for them to go about it otherwise. They would literally have to overhaul everything about themselves, and the first order of business would have to be making Wanda and Pietro into children of Magneto again.

It would be unrealistic to expect Disney to set themselves right in just a few weeks or months. These things have to be measured in years.

They were. 35 years ago. Which means they were only someone else’s children for 15 years. Making Wanda and Pietro Magneto’s children is one of the best things Marvel has ever done. It created conflict, enriched the storytelling possibilities for all three characters, made Magneto a more relatable character, was responsible for creating a whole generation of Maximoff fans… And now they’re asking us to pretend none of that ever mattered.

I’d actually dare to say that Disney aren’t asking us to do anything, because they currently don’t care about us at all. If they did, they wouldn’t have pulled something as asinine as this. No, Disney only cares about two things: their egos and their greed.

They’re stupid and selfish enough to think what they did yesterday will 1) hurt Fox, and 2) maybe make Disney a few extra bucks. They don’t think about us at all or what we’ll do. They think we’ll keep throwing money at them forever no matter what they do, that they’re untouchable. They’re about to learn otherwise.
