Kathryn Bigelow, director of The Hurt Locker, is the only woman EVER to win a Best Director Oscar. Only 4 women have ever been nominated. Women made up only 6% of Directors for the top movies of 2013. There were NO female nominees for directing, cinematography, film editing, writing (original screenplay), or music (original score) during last year’s Academy Awards.
I feel I should note that American Psycho, a major cult favorite starring Christian Bale, had a female director (Mary Harron) and female screenwriters (Mary Harron and Guinevere Turner). Despite how overly macho, masculine boys’ club like the themes are, they managed to bring out an amazing film. One of the more notable things they did for the film was add more personality to Christie, the prostitute Bateman hires twice, when she was more generic in Bret Easton Ellis’ book.
When women get to be more involved, you can get a lot more variety and nuance in the characters. When they’re not, there’s a limit on what people can see, and therefore a limit on what would make them interested in seeing a film or playing a game.
