It’s okay! I know this is tough, you’re hurting and Disney has really betrayed your trust. I know the feeling, I’ve gone through it repeatedly for the past decade of my life.

The important thing to remember is that as awful and painful as this is, Disney is just the company that owns the legal rights to these characters. They do not own who these characters really are. They do not own what defines these characters, what makes them so beautiful and special, and they do not own you or how you feel about these characters as they’re supposed to be.

I don’t know how much this will help, if any. It may just sound patronizing, and I’m sorry if it comes out that way. Ten years is a long time, and I may have lost sight of just how bad it can feel when it happens for the first time.

But regardless, I just want to say, hang in there. Keep your chin up. You’re an awesome person and you should continue to feel awesome, and Disney shouldn’t get to take that away from you. You love the real Wanda, Pietro and Magnus family, and Disney can’t take that away from you without your permission.

I hope you feel better soon, and we get to see more of your great cosplays and everything else you do.

A Black Former Gamergate Supporter Speaks Out

[I received a letter this morning from someone black who has changed their mind about Gamergate. It has been lightly edited for clarity and to remove identifying information.]

Hello, 

I am one of your followers and up until now an avid Gamergate supporter. The reason that I’m doing this using this method is because I’ve watched how people have harassed you and I fear that publicizing my identity could potentially hurt the success of the game that I’m designing.

I’ve been a with Gamergate since about around the time that #notyourshield started up, as an African American this spoke to me particularly as I know all to well what it’s like to be voice of my kind for white people that know nothing about me. 

I’ve come to realize, not only is #notyourshield basically just a reverse form of what they claim to fight against, “HEY LOOK AT THESE BLACK PEOPLE THEY AGREE WITH US, THEREFORE YOU’RE THE RACIST NOT US.” 

The whole ethics in journalism thing, at least for a good amount of those who are currently involved is an outright lie.  As I’m sure you know there are several groups of gamergate supporters all with different purposes, though some of them I can credit as being genuinely good people with matching intentions. 

However for a movement that’s sole purpose is supposedly centered around ethics in journalism a good amount of these people sure can’t seem to shut up when it comes to feminism and feminists.  

As much as some boast to be champions of free speech there are those that will turn around and more or less virtually stone anyone that does not fit within their ideology, which is funny considering that those they harass get accused of the same stuff. They wear getting blocked by people like you as a badge of honor, as if harassing someone until they cut off all contact with you is something to be proud of.  

When the GG blocklist first came about and people within these groups discussed the list and how they were on it, I naturally went to check if I was too.  I’m not.  And when I exposed that I wasn’t, I was pestered by people within the group like I’d done something wrong.  

I’ve watched as these same people call for the harassment or innocent people, including you, and it honestly makes me sick. They will even turn on their own if those people attempt to defend high-priority harassment targets. 

I watched as you were being harassed during the death of your dog. and I’m sorry for what you’ve been through. I apologize on behalf of Gamergate.

FEMCOMICS PROJECT “I DESERVE BETTER”

└ it’s created to give mistreated comic book ladies due share of respect and love. 

i. the point of the project is to produce a 21-page complete story celebrating the chosen lady and showing how she should be treated.
ii. a bunch of writers will be working on the script.
iii. every page of the story will be drawn by a different artist.
iv. the story will be posted on behalf of femcomics in parts.

all details will be added later!

No More Money.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m done giving my money to Marvel until this fiasco has been cleared up. Canceling my subscriptions. Not going to any more movies. 100% done. I have my back issues and fandom  to keep me company in the meanwhile. And if it never gets changed back, well… I guess that’s just that much more money I’ll save.

To be clear: No one is being fooled here. They can crow “all about the story” as much as they want, but none of us are buying it (hah). This is clearly somewhere between a legal maneuvering to wrest control of the Maximoffs away from Fox by re-branding them as “not mutants”, and opting to try and smash MCU and 616 canons together. Either way, it’s NOT about story; it’s about money. Well, fine. If that’s the game we’re playing.

No more money.

First, I want to point out — I am not Jewish, Romani, or any of the cultures most impacted by the Maximoff Retcon from Wednesday. I haven’t found any statements from those people — otherwise, I would reblog them here in lieu of making my own post.

Since I haven’t seen any statements, I’m going to keep mine short and to-the-point: this retcon is a few very negative things:

  • It opens the door to changing the ethnicity of characters whose ethnicity has always been an integral part of their story and their characterization.
  • It breaks one of the most important familial relationships in comics in the past thirty years — the so-called House of M has been pivotal to the single most important X-Men event in the past ten. You’re killing future potential stories by breaking that bond of blood.
  • It seems like this is being done to bring the comics more in line with the MCU, which is ridiculous in general and harmful in this case.

The MCU fucked up really badly with the Maximoffs — we know that much even just from the pre-release information we have. There is literally no reason to change 616 to match that screw-up.

I’ve seen some talk of a social media outcry with hashtags like #marvelusedtomatter, and people bringing up trying to contact Marvel on this matter via social media, so let’s see if they’ll listen. Contact them via their Twitter at @Marvel, on Tumblr at marvelentertainment, and on their various other accounts to let them know about your dissatisfaction with this retcon.

Also, if anyone wants to point me in the direction of posts made by Romani/Jewish fans, that would be super helpful!

I don’t think Disney and Marvel will actually listen to anyone, because I don’t think they give a damn about anything other than money, but it’s worth a shot if your instincts tell you that you should do it.

The more important thing I’d stress is to not give Disney your money. They made this decision because of ego and greed. Hitting their revenue stream is directly hitting one of the core reasons they ignored what fans actually want here. Even if Disney never changes anything, it can at least be said that they paid a heavy price for what they’ve done.
