What I find myself thinking any time someone decides “ethics in video game journalism” is a huge concern while people are getting threatened and harassed.

Greetings!

This is something of a quick introductory post for anyone that comes to my Tumblr via ComicBookResources.

First thing’s first: I’m going to be switching nearly all of my actual, honest thoughts and commentary about Marvel, Marvel’s comics, and Disney to this Tumblr account from here on out. I won’t be pulling any punches here like I was on CBR. This will be pure, unfiltered, and honest.

I can be very harsh with my judgment at times. I don’t mince words. If Marvel does something petty, greedy, selfish, what have you, I am going to call them out on it. I am not going to beat around the bush. I will say what I think needs to be said.

I can’t do that on CBR. CBR expects me to be the type of person that responds to insults by turning the other cheek and just taking a full force punch to the face.

Here’s the gist of the situation. I got a warning today because while talking about Marvel forcing their retcon where Wanda and Pietro aren’t Magneto’s kids anymore, I said that the current editors and writers at Marvel were petty and selfish, and the next generation would fix the messes they make. I didn’t even name anyone. I could have, because I had two specific people in mind when I said that, but I didn’t. What I said was as generic as “Congress is full of self-absorbed tools.” And yet, that’s considered over the line on CBR now.

If I can’t make a very, VERY broad statement like that, then I obviously can’t be honest and leave actual criticism of any sort on CBR anymore. My criticism is not as light as “That line on page 8 looks a little off, but the rest is aces, 10/10 everything’s super duper perfect ❤ ❤ <3.”

This raises the question of what I’ll even do with my CBR account, given how CBR has lost all value as a place for people to talk about… well, anything. And I’ll be honest, if we didn’t have two issues of All-New X-Factor left, I would’ve told the admin to just ban me and get it over with. This is, of course, assuming the admin hasn’t banned me while I’m writing this post. I’m sure there’s some excuse they can find to justify it. Who knows, maybe they’re so totalitarian now that linking to your Tumblr or Twitter account is grounds for a ban.

I’m really only keeping my CBR account alive for a final post I have in mind once ANXF is done. There are a few things I want to say about it and Peter David since I was excessively harsh toward Peter David at times. After that, I’ll probably make occasional token posts that don’t really amount to anything of actual value, but will subtly get people to move toward using Tumblr since it’s a site where real conversations can take place.

If people have any suggestions of good places to go, drop me a line and let me know. You can reblog this, send me an ask, catch me on Twitter, etc. I remember a lot of former CBR people migrated to another forum after CBR’s forums got a reboot, and someone sent me a PM with a link, but I deleted that message at some point.

Marvel Comics Presents #62, by Richard Howell.

A seer shows Scarlet Witch’s ancestor her bloodline’s future.

Awkward that Magneto is listed as part of the “bloodline” in the past when projecting the future, and how suddenly he was never part of their bloodline. Hmmmm. Sounds to me like a continuity issue with this retcon. I’m sure Rick Remender and Tom Brevoort have a great way of explaining this. I’m sure it’s just fool proof. ~sarcasm~

2015: My year of Patience

spacekatgal:

I want to tell you a story about judging someone unfairly.

A while back, a journalist in the industry insulted a game developer I respect in a particularly cruel and public way. I unconsciously of put him into a “jackass” category in my head. This is a very bifurcated, unfair box – a mental shortcut that we all take without realizing it. It’s a very human reaction. This person hurt by friend, ergo he is bad and I should shun him.

A few months later, this journalist followed me on Twitter and I proudly blocked him, announcing it to the world. I had a friend of mine pull me aside at PAX Prime and tell me I was being unfair to the guy. That he knew him and could vouch for him. That made me take a beat, reconsider if I was being fair. And so, I decided to give the guy a second chance

Over the last few months, I’ve gotten to know him better. This same person I thought was a jackass rescued a precious little puppy he found discarded into an alley. And even though he and his family are cat people, he took this dog, has loved this dog and provides that dog a wonderfully loving home. That’s a truly loving, human thing to do

This person I thought was a jackass? Well, they care about people in medical debt. They’re bothered by the way women are treated. And though we don’t share the same perspective – I know this person is trying.

To be blunt, I took the worst moment of this journalist’s life and I judged him by it. And it was unfair.

The reason I’m sharing this is, I think we’re all battle weary from 2014. How could anyone NOT be exhausted? It’s been outrage all year long. When someone does something we don’t like, we get into a pack and go blast them. This goes for all sides, even mine.

As I’m thinking about the person I want to be in 2015, that’s not it.

My New Year’s resolution is to try to show more patience and grace for the people in games. And my God, is it hard sometimes – especially being a tech feminist. Every day I run into industry people willfully ignorant about the problems women face, and it’s exhausting to deal with

Ultimately, showing people a little more patience and grace isn’t about justice – it’s about my own personal happiness. To be blunt, I can’t take another year of being at war.

I’m not going to lie and tell you I’ll be perfect at this. I’m sure I’ll fail as much as I’ll succeed. But, if there’s anything I’ve learned being a developer, it’s you can’t get where you need to be if you don’t set mission objectives

Here’s to a more constructive, positive 2015!

Which was made by her boyfriend at the time, who was married, and thirteen years her senior. She sued to try and stop it [the tape’s circulation] and she couldn’t and it became the best selling sex tape for two years on the porn market.”

Dr. Gail Dines addressing porn culture and rape culture’s intersecting roles in patriarchy

I think everyone should watch this video. It’s so real and the heart wrenching truth…

I would like to formally apologize to every woman i ever talked badly about without ever considering what you went through as a human being.  I am so very very sorry.

Stop telling me to stop talking about shit I don’t like!

peppermonster:

Do you not see how fucking oppressive that is? Sure I mostly talk about comics, but that mentality is not benign no matter what you place it on. You have no right to ever tell someone who is voicing an opinion that they should just be quite and accept things as the way they are instead.

Just because you accept the status quo, or just because the status quo benefits you, doesn’t mean my objections are silly, wrong, or invalid. Something can be perfect for you but 100% wrong for me, but just because your content I should just suffer in silence?

How about fuck no!

How about fuck you?

Telling me if I don’t like a comic I should just “be quiet” and “don’t read it” I would be doing nothing but serving to allow the things I do not like to continue on unchallenged. Things never get better without someone voicing up. Marvel will think people are thrilled unless people contact them or in some way voice their thoughts and opinions.

IF THIS WERENT THE CASE MARVEL AND ITS EDITORS WOULD NOT HAVE SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS AND WOULD NOT COMMUNICATE BACK AND FORTH WITH THEIR COMMUNITY!

I cannot pull off the boycott large enough to produce the numbers needed to have a mainstream comic cancelled. There are just too many casual readers who support a basic pull like an Avengers title. So stop telling me to not read it and Marvel will listen. BECAUSE THAT DOESNT WORK.

So, once again, don’t tell me to be quiet. Block me instead. I won’t lose sleep over it.

I feel like I should quickly mention, I’m fine with your continuing to read it if that’s what you want to do. The only time I had an issue with it was when you expressed the opinion that your buying it or not buying it doesn’t make a difference because you’re just one person. Every single person, and the actions they take, makes a difference. There’s no such thing as “I’m just one person, what I do doesn’t matter,” and seeing someone suggest they don’t matter bugged me.

The boycott element is typically natural, and something you don’t have to explicitly campaign for. It’s an accumulation of problems that eventually topple companies that aren’t being respectful toward their consumers.

I want to wrap up by saying I like your current attitude of reading it and calling out problems with it by reading it, so people know what’s wrong. Of course, I’m completely fine if you decide you don’t want to do that anymore in the future, just showing my support. 🙂

Black Superhero Movie Posters Re imagined by Alijah Villian

I love this so much

👌👌👌

Can you imagine if white people lived in a world like this?

No wonder black people are constantly offended

Really puts some perspective on things huh.

Now imagine if every movie was like this. and the only white people you saw were in the background.

maybe.

And imagine that 80% of kids shows were like this too. So, your little white child grew up only idolizing black people and black characters.

Imagine what your child would think of white people. Imagine what they would think of themselves?

Starting to feel horrified yet?

Diversity is so important like, holy shit.

I just want to mention real fast that for the Green Lantern one, John Stewart could easily be used. The Justice League cartoon used John Stewart, a deviation from how the Superman animated series introduced Hal Jordan, and John Stewart was awesome.

Uncanny Avengers Vol. 2 #1 Unlettered Preview

Oh look, Wanda and Pietro are out together, and are captured in the first issue, and the rest of the group gathers to go look for them? Am I gathering that information accurately from the letterless panels? Glad Rick and Tom are keeping with tried and tired status quo of kidnapping Wanda.

I don’t like the Inhumans being an alternate cover.

I already hate the art. SMH.

FalconCap and Pietro can be team “Stupid fucking goggles” and can just stand near each other, looking stupid.

Why is sabertooth on a magic leash? Isn’t he inverted ergo good?

Why is this art so awful?

Do I really have to write a detailed letter of all the ways the twins being in any way Inhuman doesn’t work? Like, they are aware of Luna and her existence in the Marvel offices, yes?

FML

I’m not going to go in, but if you don’t like something in comic books, you should just be quiet and look away. There are much better things that go unnoticed, like Elektra ongoings, and you’re too busy whining about Daniel Acuna’s beautiful art to notice.

I’m sorry its not your cup of tea, and if its not don’t buy it.

Tumblr fandoms make everything less enjoyable than they should, like Tumblr with all their opinions shooting off all over the place.

Do not make this into a “tumblr fandom” thing, you dismissive jerk-off. I have been blogging since 1998 and reading comic since 1990. you bet your ass the second it was available for me to no longer be a silent reader but connect to other fans and discuss the things we did and didn’t like i joined forums and did just that. I have earned my right to speak my mind. I am a paying customer. I have the right to voice my opinions, concerns, and dislikes. If you don’t like it, take you own damn advice and, uh, DON’T READ IT! simple as that. DON’T READ MY POSTS! amazing.

And why the fuck would I read a title about Electra when I don’t give a FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK about her? I have no interest or investment in her. You know who I have a LOT invested in? Pietro and Wanda. I have been a fan since I was a child. They mean something to me, a LOT to me. His character, development, and the art that represents him all concern me. I’m not just complaining to fill up my time and I refuse to read some comic YOU like just because YOU don’t want to read my opinions.

The art is not to my taste. A LOT of people hate it. I’m sure the artist is a nice person but that doesn’t make his art more to my taste or good. Its blocky, and Pietro is too stocky, he is too thick and chunky. He is 30 and Wanda’s TWIN yet he is drawn looking 50 while she is drawn young and sexy. THAT IS JUST BAD ART. Also, his costume is stupid.

This fandom is very unhappy, and I am biting the bullet and buying this comic so I can share it with the people that are rightfully boycotting it. A few bucks spent so that a bunch of people can be kept up to date with this monstrosity. I have no reason to think this train wreck will be anything but because Rick Remender is a misogynistic writer who has never given me a reason to trust him. I have never been given ANY reason to give him and Tom ANY kind of a “chance”, but our boycott will never get this book cancelled because it’s an Avengers title. Its a basic pull. The numbers are not on our side. So while everyone I know is boycotting it, I will be throwing my hard earned money at it, and you can bet your ass I will be blogging ALLLLLL about it. I am going to mention every last thing I hate, every last thing I found stupid, and I will make sure it is linked to Rick and Tom on their social media, because Marvel needs to know what the fans are thinking while as a group we don’t give either of them more than 3.99$

So go ahead and block me, because I can tell you right now I will be getting this comic, reading this comic, and blogging about this comic, and it WILL be tagged, and if you can’t handle the fact that I have opinions that’s YOUR problem not mine.

If you can’t handle the fact that I have opinions, then you can go cry yourself to sleep but don’t you DARE ever tell me to be fucking quiet again. Don’t you DARE tell me i should just accept things and be quiet. DON’T. You. DARE.

I was very glad to see this. I’m very used to seeing blind fanboys (and fangirls) demand anyone with a complaint shut up, go away and focus on something else. It’s blatant that their underlying message is “You’re not a real fan if you don’t like what’s going on. Go away so you’re not mistakenly viewed as a fan they must listen to.”

Keep being awesome. 🙂
