Some of those I disagree with (like Joss Whedon), and others I can’t judge (like Supernatural), but I definitely agree with MCU (due entirely, 100% to what Disney and Marvel are doing to Wanda, Pietro and the X-Men franchise in the comics), the mistreatment of Polaris in Claremont’s work, and to an extent Havok (though I think he could be a good character if written well).
Here’s my list, with reasons included
- Tom Brevoort and Rick Remender
Making up bullshit excuses for anything they want to do that is selfish, greedy or petty, and trying to disguise such actions as being about “telling a story.”
Two years ago, Brevoort went on his formspring to make some convoluted excuse about “genetics breeding true” to claim Lorna couldn’t be Magneto’s daughter, but Siryn could still be Magneto’s daughter. More recently, they decided that TRYING to destroy decades worth of character development and major storylines by suddenly making Wanda and Pietro not children of Magneto is somehow justifiable, and Brevoort even took the extra step to be an asshole of trying to make it sound like changing Wanda and Pietro’s parents happens all the time. Which is like saying what happened to Bruce Wayne’s parents or what happened to Krypton changes all the time.
- Square-Enix (ESPECIALLY Motomu Toriyama)
This was a slow build across a decade, and it was my first true “fuck these assholes” change.
Square-Enix has a tendency to take promising ideas for what could be brand new IPs, then say “fuck the integrity of the franchises we already have, let’s force these new ideas into IPs we already own!” They ruin the original IPs and all they have to offer just to hitch a ride on modern trends and take advantage of name recognition.
They did it to Final Fantasy X with Final Fantasy X-2. They did it to Parasite Eve with 3rd Birthday. Recently, they did it to Tomb Raider and Lara Croft with the forced “Tomb Raider” “reboot” (out of Crystal Dynamics, yes, but it only happened once Squeenix bought them out). All ideas that would have been fine as new IPs, forced where they don’t belong.
The 3rd Birthday one especially pissed me off. Aya Brea was a fucking awesome female protagonist, and they let Motomu Toriyama turn her into a pathetic wuss that’s suddenly afraid to go into combat (BS story reasons involving Eve here), will run around in snowy winter in bikinis and maid outfits that rip away to show skin when she takes damage, lets people sexually objectify her left and right, and takes borderline softcore porn showers.
On top of all of that, Tabata lied about the clothes-ripping-away mechanic being about “realism” (before Famitsu showed off the fetish costumes), and Toriyama lied about how 3rd Birthday would star Aya as a “cool, mature woman in her late 30s.” I don’t usually try to claim I’d do a better job than other writers, but Motomu Toriyama is a rare case where I feel safe in saying I sure as hell can do better than him.
I’m currently open to buying Final Fantasy XV, but that’s currently it… and only if Lightning has absolutely no part of it.
- Capcom
I’m going to get Revelations 2. I plan to eventually get the latest Resident Evil remake. Outside that, I currently have no plans.
When Inafune left Capcom, the company openly decided to “punish” Inafune and fans of the Megaman franchise by canceling all Megaman projects. In the case of Megaman Legends 3, a game fans had been wanting for a decade, Capcom actually tried to blame a “lack of fan interest” for its cancellation. This was after Capcom had plans (which they later scrapped) to force Megaman Legends fans to PAY FOR A DEMO of MML3 to “prove you want the game bad enough.”
Then we had Devil May Cry. When the DmC reboot nobody asked for was announced, fans complained… and Tameem at Ninja Theory responded to complaints with open mockery, both toward fans and toward the Dante fans knew and loved. They went on to make DmC into a game that, like the Squeenix issues, may have been good as a new IP, but terrible as a claimed part of the Devil May Cry franchise.
And then there’s Resident Evil. I could go on forever about this. I’ll be succinct by saying that they kept putting Chris and Leon on a pedestal, and kept treating two of the most iconic women of the franchise, Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield, like complete shit. Resident Evil 6 was touted as the lynchpin game in the franchise’s anniversary, yet Claire only got mentions and Jill didn’t even get that while Chris and Leon, two characters that have been in just about everything for the past decade, got to be in it.
Claire’s only the lead protagonist of Revelations 2 because of massive fan complaint, and even there, Capcom’s treating it like a budget title and giving it less funding compared to games that star Chris and Leon, and it shows in the graphics.
- Stardock and Brad Wardell
Disgusting sexist behavior and practices out of Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock. When confronted with the possibility of consequences for such actions in his own company, he threatened to fire everyone in the company. There’s plenty more out there, I can’t remember all of it and this entry is getting long, so I’ll leave it at that.
- Adam Baldwin
Entirely because of GamerGate and his actions in lending false legitimacy to a group that’s infamous for its doxxing, threats and harassment of people, almost all of them women. He created the GamerGate hashtag based on bullshit claims of journalistic corruption that centered on the idea that one woman slept with video game journalists to get good coverage. Those claims were proven false.
Even there, if he gave a single shit about trying to stop and prevent the doxxing, threats and harassment, and apologized for enabling such behavior, I might be okay with him. But he doesn’t do that. He lets it go unchallenged, and he’s made it clear in the past that he’s letting all this happen because he thinks GamerGate is some kind of backdoor into attacking the “liberal media.” Anyone that helps a hateful mob ruin innocent lives just because he wants to see his conservative agenda move forward can go fuck himself.
- DC Comics
This one might actually seem petty to some people, and I completely understand why they would think that.
DC’s on my list entirely because of how they’ve changed Harley Quinn, mostly the costume. There are characters where it doesn’t matter how their costume changes, they can dress however. Most DC characters do not fit that description.
If DC radically changed Batman to have a pigeon costume (or any other type of avian creature, really) but still called him Batman, that would piss off a lot of people, don’t you think? The same deal goes with Harley Quinn. She is supposed to have a harlequin theme and represent something of a prankster type of character. What they turned her into with the costume change is a juggalo. They made her look and theme into a true blue female Joker knockoff, when her original harlequin theme was similar but different enough for her to be taken as her own character. And they keep using the Harley Quinn name through all of it too, when it doesn’t apply anymore.

Don’t forget, in The Prom, Buffy received a golden umbrella with a small plaque on it that said “Buffy Summers, Class Protector.” In the speech, Jonathan specifically says the class didn’t really know her all that way, but they always had a feeling she was keeping them safe from something and helping them out.
So yeah, they didn’t know she was The Slayer, but they did know she was powerful in some way.

Some readers claim they read comics merely for escapism, so they don’t have to think about reality. But they’re just saying that. The ultimate escapist fantasy would be cosmic-level tales featuring such heroes as Silver Surfer or the New Gods. If the escapist philosophy of readership held true, they would be among the most successful characters out there. Instead, their solo books inevitably crash and burn due to low sales, irrespective of the quality of the individual work.

It really depends on what you’re looking at and for. If we’re speaking in very broad generalities, readers really don’t engage in just about any fiction merely for escapism. A lot of the time, they do it to build emotional connections to characters, read allegories to real life they can identify with and which make them think about the world and issues in it, that sort of thing.
But, there are definitely certain cases where people want something to escape the horrors of our world. It might have all of the above still, but it’s presented in a way where a person can feel better in spite of awful things happening. This is where a lot of comedic cartoons come into play.

New York cops, miffed by accusations of brutality and over-reaction and in a direct challenge to the peoples elected representative, Mayor Bill de Blasio, are staging a ‘work slowdown’. Arrests have fallen dramatically by at least 66% and police say they’re now making arrests “only when they have to” (which is what they should always be doing anyway). They’ve temporarily stopped using arrests as a way of keeping a lid on structural social problems and as a form of backdoor taxation. Ironically (and quite unintentionally) this could point the way to better policing nationwide (but it won’t). .. (story here)

… I don’t agree with the original person’s sentiment. Just because it’s hard for you to speak up offline, especially your parents, doesn’t make you “fake.” I think the intent of this is to try to force people to be more outspoken offline, but this is really more of a shaming tactic.
Worse, it could very easily have the opposite effect. It could make some people feel like if they can’t get over their offline anxiety well enough to confront their parents, then they may as well not even try to do the right thing at all.
Sometimes, people don’t need to be shamed with labels like “fake.” Sometimes they just need to be inspired enough to feel like they have the courage to take the next step.

however, feminists are the group that will stand up for male victims of domestic violence before anyone else does
just because a post doesn’t get around as quickly as another one doesn’t mean it’s viewed as less important, it just means that it’s not being shown to the right people at the right time
the recognition of domestic abuse victims is imperative, male or female or otherwise, but you can’t expect everything to go from 0 to 100 just like that
Why is this only the first time I’ve seen this
Disney men being used for this feels very awkward to me for the exact same reason it would feel awkward if they used Disney women, and for the same basic reason why I don’t like the forced reboot of Tomb Raider and its idea of what “Lara” should be.
I understand the idea is to juxtapose the purity of Disney and the characters’ idealism with the horror of abuse, that the background of these characters adds to the sense of violation. But in general, I think something like this does more to tarnish the idealism and iconic, inspiring power behind the characters than to call out domestic violence as a problem.
Before anyone judges me for that, please read the rest to understand what I mean. There are characters that can inspire you by the example of “Awful things can happen to good people, it’s not weak to admit that you need help and seek it out, do what’s best for you.”
However, people don’t seem to accept the value of a good heroic type character these days. There’s a trend toward seeing those heroic types suffer and live in depressing, horrifying worlds that constantly destroy them on the inside, as with Man of Steel and the forced Tomb Raider reboot. Characters like Superman and Lara Croft, when they’re treated like the heroes they are, inspire because they represent the best in a person and the inner strength to not give into the worst of the world that wants to drag you down.
In story form, a lot of people these days don’t value this type because they see no drama in it. They consider such characters to be pointless and bland because they think a character isn’t a character unless he or she goes through a lot of pain.
And I guess, these pictures feel a lot like they’re just furthering that idea, of seeing heroes brought low instead of being icons for a person to look at and think “The world is worth living in, there are good things and people, and I won’t let the horrors of the world ruin my ability to see good and beauty in the world. I won’t let these terrible things define me.”
