Oh so many reasons.

1) it equates the anger of the oppressed to the hate of their oppressors.
2) it blames oppressed groups for their oppression. Bigotry doesn’t exist because people hate bigots. It exists because oppressed people oppose it. It exists because of bigots and because of privileged folks being complicit or tacitly condoning systems of oppression.
3) it’s fundamentally untrue. Hatred of oppression doesn’t lead to more hatred; it leads to progress.
4) it is used to attack any attempt by oppressed people to obtain liberation. Point out that something or someone is repulsively racist and all of a sudden you’re “breeding more hate”.

It’s a fundamental misrepresentation of reality that blames victims and excuses fucked up behavior.

It’s a tone argument used by people who don’t want to get called on their complicity in maintaining structures of injustice.

It’s also very much like a parent telling a toddler to ask nicely or we won’t get a cookie. It implies that A) they think our basic human rights are not a need but a favor we’re asking and B) they think they are in a position inherently deserving of deference.

People with privilege need to let go of the idea that justice is charity—something nice they own which they can choose to give or not—rather than something to which we are all entitled.

I’ve always been disappointed that we don’t have more fiction starring mothers. Video games are especially egregious with this. The only mother examples I can think of are ones that are villains (Queen Zeal), get severely demoted in the supposed canon once they become mothers (Rosa from FF4), or die.

Meanwhile, we have a lot of stories about fathers.

Before 3rd Birthday, I would’ve been open to games on the Enix side. That game and every single thing about it is so blatantly insulting that practically everything about Squeenix disgusts me. I’m especially disgusted by how Squeenix hasn’t even tried to make up for 3rd Birthday by making another Parasite Eve game where 3rd Birthday never happened and Aya’s treated with respect. Instead, they’re doing what they did with FFX-2, which is letting it sit exactly the way it is until the day people forget about the source material of Parasite Eve and think 3rd Birthday was great.

I’m still iffy about Final Fantasy XV. I’m keeping an eye on it and I’m ready to pull out of that game the second I see any of the awfulness I’ve come to expect out of the company. I might also buy Tomb Raider games if they bring the real Lara Croft back in another reboot and make her the primary focus of the Tomb Raider franchise again like she should be, instead of relegating her to less-promoted side games they’ll inevitably stop making when they think all interest in the real Lara is gone.

Sorry, I should have been clearer in how I explained my views. Hopefully I’m better at it this time. 🙂

I know you’re approaching this as Squeenix being comprised of two sides, one Square and one Enix. I see Squeenix as one whole entity, rather than two halves that make a whole. I’m not interested in the Enix side for the same reason Capcom’s actions with Megaman, Devil May Cry and Resident Evil mean I’m not touching stuff like Dragon’s Dogma or Street Fighter.

A company may have a bunch of different teams that do completely different things, but at the end of the day, they’re all part of one company. At first, I’ll limit my response to just the one or two IPs that a company screws over. But if the company’s disrespect affects too many IPs, or there are too many incidents, then I swear off the company wholesale. It’s still money that goes to a company that I feel doesn’t really deserve to make money anymore until they start acting better.

I have absolutely no problem with you choosing to buy Enix games, of course. 🙂 I can understand why you would. The Enix side isn’t responsible for the Square side and what people like Toriyama do. This is simply how I approach the issue.
