Injustice: Gods Among Us – Year Three Chapter 17

Well, I know this isn’t DC “canon,” but at least I can say this Harley may actually be Harley Quinn or fairly close. She’s got the harlequin theme she’s supposed to have instead of looking like the female Joker knockoff DC’s been trying to turn her into.

Funny how big a fuss can be made over something so thin on actual development or resolution.

If you’ve already seen this issue’s preview scans and nothing else, well, you pretty much learned everything about the twin’s parentage “big reveal” right there.  Still, to masochistically recap the relevant pages:

Yep, that’s it.  Can’t blame Quicksilver for nearly having a coronary, as it doesn’t do anything to adequately explain H.E.’s motives or methods for doing what he allegedly did here, or address any continuity inconsistencies whatsoever.  Plus H.E. belittling their long-standing orphan trauma is really harsh… oh, right, I forgot that his soul has been completely sucked out.  My bad.

I suppose the silver lining here is that at least the Romani connection was maintained.  (Marya instead of Magda, though again this just raises more questions.)

Moving on from there, we eventually see a little Maximoff twin interaction as they encounter Rogue and prepare to escape their captors.  But first, Spider-Man’s Quicksilver’s humor comes out to play again…

Pietro apparently forgot that this Wanda has no sense of humor.  (Honestly, how is it that a scene of sibling bickering can come off so catty in Remender’s hands?)

However, I will commend Remender for preserving this aspect of Quicksilver’s nature.  Thank you for that, Rick:

Eventually the story moves to Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Rogue finding Sabretooth battling Luminous and co. – and again, here is Quicksilver’s new style “quick-wit” on display:

image

Hmmm.  As I’ve said before, humor is hard to write, and I’m willing to cut writers a break on this since (to me) it’s soooo far preferable having a light-hearted Quicksilver versus an overbearing Quicksilver.  But I can’t help but wish that Remender would employ a drier edge to Quicksilver’s tongue instead of this flippant style; it’s hard to reconcile with what we’ve come to expect of him.

Oh, and we can’t forget the new little sister, can we?  After her close encounter with Sabretooth’s claws and amazing recovery (Huh?  Well, it’s comics, so I guess that was a given) Luminous is back for the final showdown:

image

For a vaunted “genetically superior” specimen, she certainly seems to harbor a pronounced obsession rivalry with her “brother,” don’t you think?

So… with the Unity Squad assembled at last, how does the issue end?

image

With a teaser, d’oh!  Which basically lets us know that, Maximoff melodrama aside, this story is pretty much already a wrap going into Secret Wars.  What, you still have questions about the Maximoff retcon?  Well, too bad, suckers!  Mwahahaha!!!

Okay, okay… rather than pull my hair out in frustration at this wholly unsatisfying “reveal” and the obnoxious mad teasing, I’ll just add in my own Big Burning Questions to the list we’re all in the process of compiling here:

1. Presuming that H.E. isn’t lying (and we know this is quite possible) why did H.E. feel the need to genetically alter a set of normal fraternal twins in the first place?  What is up with the twin thing anyway, given that Wundagore seems to have been used to attract a few of them over the years; couples with children who mysteriously died in the process of delivery?  Did H.E. force alleged eye-witness Bova to lie or was she just misinformed/brainwashed all this time?

2. Assuming again that Pietro really is Mateo and Wanda is Ana, how is it that Django and Marya did not recognize their children when H.E. returned them?  (Yes, I can think of a few explanations for this already, but I’m waiting for the official one.)  My real point here being that – again – we have visual confirmation that Pietro had his silver hair from a very young age (birth really, but if this detail gets somehow ignored/retconned out, here it is established that very shortly thereafter he had the silver hair.)  This right here would logically be a huge tip-off to any birth parent, so I’m wondering what screwiness is going on here.  It’s safe to say that Django and Marya did not recognize them as their own (and why would they, as Pietro looks nothing like either parent?  Even Wanda doesn’t look a lot like them, but it’s not as obvious as with Pietro.)  So again, waiting on official explanation.

3. Chthon, of course, and Wanda’s magic.  Huge issues there.

4. Children of Magda no longer… which just like the “mutants no more” issues is also directly contradicted several times in past continuity.  So in addition to H.E. being powerful enough to successfully mimic a genetic mutant signature, this suggests he maybe also did something to mimic a genetic connection to Magneto and Magda… for who knows what absurd reason.

5. Seriously, what is up with the silver hair thing?  While there have been other silver-haired characters in the Marvel U, this retcon is definitively establishing a genetic silver hair = speed connection between Quicksilver, Luminous and Speed.  And by inference any of their future progeny.

Yes, folks, for me in the end, it’s all about the silver hair. 🙂

Ugh.  Walking away from this now!  Anyway, I think it’s fairly safe to say that, at the moment, the door is still pretty well wide open to a future re-retconning.  No matter what is eventually revealed, all we have to do is pull in Immortus down the road, because there is no Maximoff string-pulling trope deus ex machina quite like that particular time lord – and this mess has his name written all over it.

You know what my problem is? My problem is I read Quicksilver’s wikipedia page and know about his convoluted origins and how this retcon doesn’t neatly fit with what’s already established. Why would Bova or the High Evolutionary lie to Magneto? Why would the High Evolutionary suddenly decide to experiment on human babies when, as far as I know, he’s always experimented on animals ? By that token,I don’t think he ever dabbled in robotics, so where did Eve come from? Why did Mateo and Ana suddenly become Pietro and Wanda? And most importantly (as you pointed out) : what’s up with Quicksilver’s white hair?

Also, I seriously hate how Remender writes Quicksilver. Granted, a funny Pietro is more entertaining than a super-serious Pietro, but it feels so OOC that it distracts me. And then there’s the fact that Acuña draws Pietro as if he had little bumps on his head…they kind of remind of cat ears.Have I ever mentioned how much I miss All New X-Factor (perfect writer and perfect artist for Quicksilver)?

Unless I’m misunderstanding the premise of the upcoming ‘verse-smooshing upheaval (Secret Wars?) entirely, don’t we kind of already know they will be Magneto’s kids again like, almost immediately?
Because why else would they be involved with the House of M title if they remain not only not-related to him, but also not mutants anymore either?
It seems this might be the swiftest reverse-retcon of a retcon of a retcon in history.

I wasn’t really going to say anything about this, buuuuuuuut….

There are any number of possible reasons for why they might be doing House of M. The most optimistic possible reason, which I would like to hope is the case, is the one you put forth: that Wanda and Pietro will be Magneto’s kids again very soon. I’m a Lorna fan, I want to see Lorna and Wanda spend more awesome sister time together like we saw in Exiles (AU versions of them) and All-New X-Factor #14. 🙂

However, one disappointing possible reason for using House of M is to ruin and destroy it. House of M is iconic, and it’s a powerful representation of how much amazing potential there is in the whole Magnus family. Marvel may want to use Secret Wars to smear the entire House of M concept. They may expect that if they make the House of M and Magnus family look terrible during Secret Wars, they can create supporters for the forced retcon on 616 Wanda and Pietro.

Those are ONLY potential scenarios. More information is
needed to accurately assess what Marvel wants to do, and we may not get
enough information until the issues are on store shelves.

It’s very telling that Marvel is deliberately avoiding saying much about Secret Wars House of M. When they talked about Secret Wars at a conference, the only info they gave out amounted to “Yep, this book sure is happening, and this guy is writing it. On to the next one.” They’re keeping their plans close to the chest, which makes you wonder what they’re planning that makes them feel the need to be so secretive.

But, I’m not going to set a definite opinion on it any which way until I know enough to be sure in what’s going on. It’d be bad to praise and promote something it turns out Marvel’s doing with malicious intent, but it would also be terrible to prematurely tear down what might turn out to be a great story made with the best of intentions.

I’m going to talk about Luminous. This is going to be a quick, simple opinion, one others may not agree with.

The problem with Luminous isn’t that she exists. The problem with Luminous is her reason for existing.

I’m a firm believer that no character is truly terrible and irredeemable. Characters can be used well or poorly, they can be written spot on or completely out of character, but there’s always something about them that can be good.

Fans of Wanda, Pietro and everything tied to them know what’s wrong with Luminous, even if they don’t quite know how to vocalize it. They know why she exists. They know what function Disney and Marvel jointly want her to serve. Luminous has no future as long as the things Marvel changed that led to her creation remain as they are.

Undo the retcon forced on Wanda and Pietro during Axis. That is the only real option for Luminous if she is to have any kind of a future ahead of her. This is my one olive branch of advice on this matter, and I give it because I want to believe there’s a desire to see Luminous last and be perceived as having some semblance of worth as a character. I hope my trust is not misplaced.

Magneto #18:

  • is it just me, or is Lorna behaving a bit too much like her counterpart from the WatXM cartoon here? Just weird, that doesn’t really feel like Lorna – but, hey, they’re finally acknowledging she exists and is Magneto’s daughter, that’s good enough for me!
  • (but I do prefer her Serval costume)
  • oh Mags, always the big plans for your legacy… and always reckless with your own safety – how can anyone not love you?
  • yep, his first meeting with Namor is still the best thing ever!
  • Polaris/Riptide interaction lol
  • so… Second Coming only happened a few months ago? Ugh, Marvel-time, why do I still bother trying to make sense of it?
  • a bunch of people fangirling over Magneto’s general awesomeness right at the end of the world? Does Tumblr finally come together to all live in the same city after the incursions?
  • I had forgotten how much I missed these Magneto/Namor interactions…
  • ugly Ultimate sentinels, meh
  • okay, but have we actually gotten a definitive answer as to what exactly happened to Magneto’s power?
  • and how can they make an issue where the world is literally about to be destroyed and Mags and Lorna are working together to try and prevent that and not once is the subject of the twins even brought up? How can Marvel continue to pretend this retcon is all about the story when they can’t even bother showing the effects it had on Magneto, one of the three people most affected by it, a person who has lost so much in his long life and now has lost his last remaining connection to Magda and the life they should have had?!
  • also, someone who’s been paying more attention to comics news than me, is this series ending with Secret Wars too, or….?

I’m going to cut out the parts I’m not talking about. I hope that’s okay! For anyone wondering, maximoffmartell’s original posts also discusses Storm #11 and Uncanny Avengers v. 2 #4.

Lorna in Magneto #18 feels like Lorna to me, especially when faced with the end of the world. She’s willing to admit she cares about her father because it may be the last time she sees him again, while she saves tons of people at the same time.

My mental picture of the Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon version of Lorna is a shy daddy’s little girl type that’s been incredibly sheltered from the brutal nature of the world. It’s an image that works fine for that cartoon and potentially for certain AUs, but it’s not one I’d want for Lorna and one I don’t think she exhibits here. The future version of her in WatXM is a bit closer, but I don’t think by much; that one cares deeply about her dad too, but she’s very hardened and crazy.

I also disagree with you on the costume; I think this is the best costume and version of it she’s had to date. 🙂 The Polaris and Riptide interaction was great though.

And I agree with you about crowd reactions. Maybe that’s how people would really react, but it all feels very off to me as an outside reader. I think that’s the only real criticism I have of the issue.

I’m really glad the Magneto solo didn’t mention the forced retcon on the twins. I understand why some people want that, it’s a fair thing to want, but aside from my subjective reasons, references to highly controversial developments can distract from the story’s actual quality and really date a story. People end up caring more about what “side” or “position” a writer advances in those cases than about the story itself.

That said, Bunn said a few things on a Marvel.com chat weeks ago that suggest it’s possible we may see more in that vein in coming issues.
