With Marvel’s spiteful attitude toward Polaris, I guarantee we won’t see her featured and named in ANY Death of X or Inhumans vs X-Men core comics in like this.
They’ll feature characters like Wolfsbane, Rockslide, Warpath, Warlock, Elixir and so on, but ask them to support Polaris and they shudder at the thought. Either they’re afraid of Fox discovering Lorna’s potential and doing everything they can to suppress it, or they’re so beholden to their negative perceptions of Polaris that they absolutely refuse to give her a real chance
It goes way, way beyond simply not trusting her to be able to sell a comic book. And I can prove it.
All-New X-Factor presented Polaris as a team leader for the first time in her entire now almost 50 year history. Secret Wars allowed her to actually take part in the event; sure, not in the MAIN book, but as part of the Magneto solo and as an AU version of her for House of M.
Both of these things are great, but they also prove that Marvel is aware of how much people like Polaris and want to see more of her.
I wouldn’t normally point this out, under the belief that pointing this out might cause Marvel to not give her more opportunities with the “he’ll just use it to demand more and more” excuse… but I already know Marvel has no intention of giving her a meaningful role in Death of X or Inhumans vs X-Men, and has probably refused to even so much as consider her future at all.
Marvel can’t take away something they weren’t going to give in the first place.
So, I’ve established that Marvel is fully aware of how fans want more Polaris. Here’s the next part.
A second excuse for Marvel is “Stuff featuring Polaris wouldn’t sell.” But, as I established before, the Scarlet Witch solo is selling worse than anything so far that’s featured Polaris. And that’s WITH a shitton of advertising and marketing, something Marvel’s repeatedly and deliberately withheld from Polaris. If sales were the real reason, Marvel would have canceled the Scarlet Witch solo months ago.
And let’s not forget all the attempts to “replace” Lorna with other character for Scarlet Witch.
Marvel is aware of Lorna’s growing interest and massive potential. Marvel also won’t let guaranteed low sales stop them from putting out any comic books they’re determined to put out, even after giving them thousands of chances.
The problem for Polaris isn’t Polaris, and it’s not Fox. It’s Marvel. Marvel is the problem. You cut through all the bullshit, and it’s Marvel that keeps excluding her from things they’ll let thousands of less known characters be in. It’s Marvel that keeps refusing to give Lorna marketing while bending over backwards to give it to stuff Wanda’s in that doesn’t involve mutants. It’s Marvel that keeps looking for excuses to cancel anything featuring Lorna while doing the same to continue anything featuring whatever character or group they want to force people to accept.
If you’re looking for a clear-cut and blatant sign of how two-faced and hypocritical Marvel can be, the situation for Polaris does a great job of showing that. Marvel “logic” is, essentially, them doing whatever the hell they want while guided by whatever biases and corporate agenda they have and then making up half-baked excuses to try to make it sound good on paper. Expecting fans not to be able to see through it.
In case it’s not obvious, yeah, I’m still pissed off. Marvel’s lack of support and respect for Polaris is so bad that I sincerely think they don’t deserve the rights to her. She’s going to waste under ownership of a company that clearly doesn’t give a shit about her and what she has to offer.
