She’s a fucking psychiatrist.
ACTUAL FAKE GEEK GUYS ONLY SUPERFICIALLY FAMILIAR WITH WHAT THEY’RE POSTING ABOUT
Okay some responses are trying to correct me and say Harley Quinn “canonically” used sex to cheat her way to her degree. What yall actually mean is some hack shitlord neckbeard writers retconned this to be the case because they decided sexy blonde woman + doctor LOL MUST HAVE CHEATED WITH HER EVIL WOMANLY CHARMSHarley originates from Batman: The Animated Series where she was a serious, competent doctor and a genius, which is also backed up by other comic stuff I’ve seen so whatever turds wrote that other garbage they can huff their ow farts
She’s a fucking Ph.D in psychology and criminology. She’s literally one of the most intelligent people in her field which is WHY she got to work with the Joker in the first place. She’s INSANELY intelligent and often outsmarts Joker in her own plans. She’s done things to Batman that Joker can only dream of because she doesn’t bullshit around when it comes to planning to kill him. Who the fuck’s the dumbass to call her “sexy but stupid” as if she doesn’t dumb herself down enough just to be AROUND Joker. omfg I need a minute.
This however doesnt change the fact that she is a sociopath and codependent as hell on the Joker and their relationship shouldnt be romanticized.
Hold the phone, she canonically used sex to pass her classes and that has nothing to do with neckbeards, you fucking idiots. I love harley, I have that comic. The comic written by the same btas writers. Are you really calling those writers who wrote compelling female characters with fantastic back stories neckbeards because they gave her an unsavory past? She became a psychologist for money and fame, that’s why she wanted to interview the joker. But then she fell for him and that is the canonical story whether you like it or not.
Harley is very ditzy but she’s also smart as hell so really it didn’t matter that she used sex to pass her classes because she wasn’t interested in psychology for knowledge, but for fame. But she has proven to be intelligent in the btas series and later media despite her back story and that’s the point. Not to mention in the same story, she’s the one to figure out how to make Joker’s plan work. The writers made sure to show how she thinks differently and uses that to her advantage and you people want to act like that never happened.
If you refuse to acknowledge her canonical story because you think it’s sexist, you refuse to acknowledge a large part of what Harley is. She is manipulative and sharp and she knows how to get what she wants. Mad Love proves that.
It’s all in how you interpret different elements of her character history.
Harley is smart, including much smarter than the Joker. She was actually able to capture Batman, something the Joker is shown incapable of doing to the point that he gets pissed that Harley managed to do it.
But as we see in the original picture, a lot of people choose to ignore all of who Harley is to write her off as an idiot. They miss the whole point that 1) Harley is a hopeful romantic whose emotions can override her intellect, and 2) that the Joker didn’t merely manipulate a naïve girl as they want to believe, but that the Joker is menacing specifically because he can manipulate someone as intelligent as Harley into going along with him.
However, I’ll make one caveat: the “sexy but stupid” line may or may not accurately refer to what DC’s been turning Harley into since New 52. I stopped touching anything tied to DC once New 52 forced the stupid new “Harley Quinn” out there, the one that’s so far removed from her harlequin theme that she shouldn’t even be called by her codename anymore.
“Harley Quinn” as DC is using her nowadays is so far removed from who she actually is as a character that one of her creators, I believe Paul Dini, even openly said that he has no opinion on comic book Harley Quinn because she literally wasn’t anything close to the character he created anymore.
In any case, I was pleased with Convergence: Harley Quinn #1, and I’m looking forward to getting to read the next issue. Hopefully some day DC stops being stupid and brings her back for real.
Can’t help but totally love these four!

Here’s an interesting thought exercise, on the matter of the Batgirl variant cover that got pulled.
Batman had his back broken by Bane in the comics. Most people know this.
Let’s say the whole emphasis of Batman getting has back broken was to establish how much of a threat Bane is before he goes to fight Batgirl.
Let’s say the act of Batman having his back broken lasted for 20 years.
Let’s say that while there were no initial plans to use Bruce Wayne anymore, writers found a way to keep him around… so long as he stops being Batman, gets a completely different identity, and remains in a wheelchair.
For 20 years, Batman no longer exists. Every depiction in the comics of the character formerly known as Batman is now with the new identity.
How many Batman fans would scream bloody murder and demand DC Comics change everything back?
Harley Quinn and Convergence: Harley Quinn #1 Thoughts

I just finished reading the first issue. For people that don’t know, this is some big event DC’s doing where heroes from before New 52 get to come back for a couple issues, and there’s an implication in the story itself that DC will only choose one comic book to keep going.
Which is bullshit, but what can you say.
I need to stress this. I’m a fan of the real Harley Quinn, this one. I didn’t go out and buy everything Harley Quinn, but I read and enjoyed all of her ongoing series (except the last dozen or so) in the late 00s; the series was released from 2000 to 2004. I greatly enjoyed her presence in anything Batman-related. I hoped she’d be in a Nolan film, and while I didn’t like her costume in Arkham Asylum, I accepted it purely because it was a video game adaptation and the real Harley Quinn was still intact.
Then DC threw her away because they have no respect for her, and replaced her with a completely different character that they slapped the code name on despite that other character not even so much as using the harlequin theme.
Since New 52, I haven’t touched ANYTHING DC Comics unless it had the real Harley Quinn in it. I don’t watch DC cartoons anymore. I don’t read DC Comics anymore. I don’t see DC films. I avoided Dark Knight Rises specifically because of this.
So to finally see Harley Quinn again… I can’t quite say “I’m thankful” because I don’t feel like I should have to be thankful after DC Comics poured so much effort into trying to make everyone forget about the real Harley Quinn and replace her with the random non-Harley character that is New 52 “Harley.” But I am definitely happy to see her again, which is why I bought this.
With that covered, onto my thoughts about Convergence: Harley Quinn #1.
It starts out great, and I get the feeling from the opening that Steve Pugh recognizes and understand how a lot of Harley Quinn fans feel about the past few years. Lots of hints at the beginning along the lines of how Harley’s taken for granted, followed by her showing her spunky, zany, off the wall self. The opening is an excellent revival of the character and everything she is and stands for.
Then we get into this dome situation, where she’s out of costume and seemingly almost recovered from the mental issues that led to her becoming Harley Quinn. This is where we see a more emotional human side to Harley, which is great too. All her insanity is playful, charming insanity without her causing bodily harm when she’s in this phase. Loopy is a good word for description. There’s also the bits of good playful geeky girl I’ve missed for so long.
She chows down on chocolate. She downs coffee. She has hallucinations about little fish swimming around, and while she can be really rude, it’s a fun and unintentional rudeness. She’s got the naive wonder thing down. THIS is Harley Quinn, and I’ve missed her these past few years.
The only detail I’m not quite sure on how I feel about is linking her Harley Quinn madness so closely to Joker. We know he’s the origin, but I feel like to imply her being Harley Quinn getting tied so close to the Joker implies she would need to ditch her harlequin theme in order to fully move past him. I would’ve liked it a lot more if they used a face that looks like Harley Quinn instead of one that looks like Joker.
But, I can shrug it off by simply interpreting the Joker face to represent when Harley Quinn as Harley Quinn is cruelly violent, rather than the playful cool self she otherwise exhibits.
We see Poison Ivy and Catwoman in this too, which I think fans of Gotham Sirens and those specific characters greatly appreciate. The issue wraps up with Poison Ivy and Catwoman getting Harley Quinn suited up and back to her insane violent self.
It was a great issue, worth every page. I’m looking forward to the next one. As much as I would like for her to get to exist again like she should, DC Comics wants to suck lately, so I expect this is the last we’ll see of her for another 10 years or so. Hopefully I’m wrong about that.

Now if only DC brought the real Harley Quinn back in all her awesomeness, I’d be willing to buy DC stuff again.
