this is an insult

I once applied and interviewed at a bookstore cafe for a barista position. It was way closer to my home, and I had almost a decade of experience working in a coffee shop at that point.

Got to the interview, and it turned out they didn’t want a barista, they wanted someone to spearhead their new cafe, as the cafe that had been in the store before didn’t want to resign their lease with the bookshop. They wanted to put their own cafe in its place, all new menus etc. They needed someone experienced to train their new staff, to handle window displays, to communicate with the bookstore owners about changes and needs of the cafe, to be able to handle inventory and ordering.

Okay, I had basically done most of that stuff at my previous job. I asked if cafe positions would also be required/trained to work the bookstore.

They would. They would be required to run the book sale counter, stock and reshelf books, and help bookshop customers find things. They would also–despite having an outside cleaning company–have to help maintain bathroom cleanliness. They’d have to take out trash, and clean spills, and vacuum.

Wow, that’s a lot, I said. Is this a manager’s position, then?

No, I was told, it wasn’t, but there was a chance that after a training period it might become one. And that made me pause, because I’d been working as the front-of-house manager at my cafe, and I knew how much work that entailed, and what kind of money I was making, and it was only the commute that had me looking for a new job.

So I asked what the job paid.

$8. E I G H T  D O L L A R S. Per hour. Barely above minimum. For all of that work. For someone they expected to get an entirely new cafe up and running, and then also do the work of the bookstore and the cleaning company as well.

I thanked the woman for the interview, said I’d have to talk to my significant other about the impact a four dollar pay cut would have on our finances, and that I wasn’t sure it was the job for me. She asked me to sleep on it, and she’d call me the next day.

This is a job I was way more than qualified for. I had years of experience doing exactly the things they wanted. It was a convenient location, close to my home–I could walk there if I absolutely had to. I did not go home and talk about that four dollar pay cut and what it would do to our finances. I knew as soon as she told me that not only was it not feasible for us, it was downright insulting. That little money? For a frankly ridiculous list of responsibilities and expectations?

She called back the next day. I thanked her again, and told her in no uncertain terms that my time was worth way more than what they were offering.

And whenever people bitch about Millennials being lazy, not spending money, not buying houses…whatever the complaint of the month is…I think about the very nice lady who conducted this interview, and how confused she was that I didn’t want the job.

full offense but none of you would have ever survived fanfiction.net in 2009

#ikr #people on this website are ridiculous #the dark age of fics when you couldn’t even specify a freaking ship so when you clicked you had no idea what was waiting #could be your ship but could be your notp #there was no warnings you had to hope the summary gave enough info (most of the times it did NOT) #fandom history

Oh man the good ol’ days.

It was pretty much click and hope for the best.

This whole thing misses the time period of having to find whole websites specifically dedicated to a certain fandom or type of story. And sometimes go through multiple sites. Fanfiction.net at least centralized content.

everytime someone makes a list of “progressive” reasons to watch a show im just like:

Supporting progress in culture is important, but a show or other piece of media having certain elements shouldn’t instantly mean it must be engaged in or supported. It needs more than that.

A good case in point is female characters in video games. In the late 90s, female characters as protagonists became very popular. And it was a good new trend! Most of my fave characters came out of it.

Unfortunately, what a lot of companies took away from that was “If we put a woman on the cover of this shitty game, we’ll make more money.” It didn’t even matter if the actual game had no women or even no characters, like puzzle games. Put a woman on the cover, sell more copies, don’t need to bother with quality.

I strongly suspect the deluge of bad games paired with images of female characters led to the more recent trend of companies acting like female-led games should be avoided, and why the good ones have been devalued or reimagined in horrid ways.

So in sum, a show or other thing ticking the boxes of progressive traits isn’t enough alone. Framing matters a lot too, along with plenty of other variables.

The RNC sent me a notice of official census material that was actually a fundraiser for the republican candidates running in the midterms. The paperwork was presented as being an official document required to be filled out by law, but it was patently false. This is corruption. This is meant to deceive people into giving data and money to a political party under the guise of nonpartisan census data. This undermines trust in the census, local government, and the democratic process. This is beyond disgusting, and I’m mailing back the form to tell the RNC how I really feel about their bullshit.

Signal boost. LOOK OUT FOR THIS BULLSHIT!

I got this. I’m leaning toward filling in bullshit answers and sending it in just to fuck with their data.

The New Porn Blogs

angryschnauzer:

Something that i’ve seen happening in my notifications this week is a new kind of porn blog interacting with my posts, and i want to explain WHY its so important to block them.

In the past all that would happen if a porn blog would follow you is just that, they’d follow you. It was all to do with google algorithyms where if a porn blog was shown as ‘linked’ or following a legitimate site/blog then it increased the place they came in the google searches. Great if you are one of those scam websites that gets people to click on links that either plant malware or are just shady as fuck.
Porn blogs were also sometimes shut down without warning so all the scammers hard work was over and gone. Good for us, not good for them.
Most of these blogs were just stolen gifs/videos from other porn blogs anyway. If you thought gif stealing was bad/rife in the geek/nerd fandoms, just have a peep at the porn blogs.

Well a lot of the search engines etc caught onto this and built controls into their software, so they found a new way of getting (or at least trying to get) people to click on links to take them off of the tumblr site. This is by finding a random post from a legitimate blogger, which could be about anything, and either deleting the entire content of the post and adding in some ridiculous comment like ‘For more fun follow this link’ with a hyperlink off of tumblr, or if its a photo that in any way is either fun/a meme/or a little nsfw, they keep that in place and just add their link like above. Scroll down their blog and literally every single post will be a reblog and have exactly the same comment on, getting you to click and take you off site.

What does this matter i hear you ask? Well, when it comes to reporting a post, it helps to confuse the tumblr bots/staff as to what’s being reported… the comment or the original post? This means that when a bunch of posts are reported, they are all coming from different originators, this will make tumblr staff’s life even harder, and legitimate blogs are at risk of someone hitting ‘deactivate blog’ in the admin settings, meaning YOU COULD LOOSE YOUR ENTIRE BLOG BECAUSE SOME ASSHOLE PORN BOT REBLOGGED FROM YOU.

So don’t ignore this kind of thing, if you see one of these stupid reblogs (the bots very rarely actually follow you anymore), BLOCK THEM RIGHT THERE AND THEN.

Signal boost. I’ve seen some posts with 100.000 or 200.000 notes and the latest 5 to 7 reblog comments have been nothing but these porn bot phrases!

Report those blogs, it’s 1 more click compared to blocking them (and it blocks them automatically) and it hopefully helps to get rid of them.

OMG. This. Changes. Everything.

Reblogging for my followers who might have trouble remembering whether or not they’ve taken their medicine!

OH MY GOD, THIS WILL HELP ME SO MUCH. I GET SO SCARED WHEN I DON’T KNOW IF I JUST TOOK MY MEDS TWICE.

THANK YOU, I’M ABOUT TO CRY.

Let me share with you guys a product that super helps me remember if I took my meds or not (because while the above is great, I still would manage to confuse myself):

They count as soon as you put the top back on. So if I don’t know if I’ve taken my medication for the day, I can check the cap to see how long ago I opened the container! It’s brilliant!

Delightful. Pass it around, friends!
