People in Ferguson used the Mockingjay slogan
Some white people do not want Mockingjay to be compared to Ferguson. Why? Is it because, maybe, the novel is about white people? Is it hard to see that white people fiction is black people’s current reality?
Now’s a good time to remind everyone that Katniss wasn’t white in the book. By description, she was probably Native American.
I don’t really mind if people use the Mockingjay slogan or any other fictional slogan, but I want to quickly say I can understand a couple reasons for people not wanting to see it used.
One is that many people perceive use of fiction for real world events in this vein to be a sign of disconnect from reality; another recent group that’s done awful things while calling themselves a “movement” has been regularly mocked for using language explicitly referring to their actions as akin to being the hero in a video game, “play to win,” etc.
The other possible reason I can think of for being against use of the Mockingjay slogan is a worry that people will take its inspirational use as a sign that fiction can incite certain behaviors, and carry that into claiming fiction needs to be censored. The Comics Code Authority had to be created to make comics kid-friendly mid-20th century because of public paranoia about comics making kids deviants and violent, and video games needed to establish the ESRB after too many complaints about the violence in Mortal Kombat and other games.
So, again, I’m personally okay with it being used, but I wanted to highlight a couple fair reasons I think people may have for being against it.

Spread this shit around tumblr right now.
4 chan users are planning to trigger transgender people by posting pictures and sending asks on tumblr. They are hoping to drive trans people to suicide. Here is a source. Be aware the bottom part of this page contains some really awful stuff so don’t read past the warning if you don’t wanna see horrible hate speech and slurs.
Spread this around so the trans community are aware and prepared- it’s just days after Transgender Day of Remembrance which obviously makes this more upsetting.
