Why The Escapist Won’t Talk About GamerGate

innuendostudios:

For the last three or four months I’ve been working on a webseries for The Escapist. Several years ago, the site had a tabletop show call I Hit It With My Axe, a reality-ish series wherein feminist alt-porn stars play Dungeons & Dragons. The show was pretty polarizing during its original run, having all of the following: A) female gamers in a male-dominated space, which riled up the “anti-SJW” crowd, B) professional porn stars, which riled up anti-porn feminists, and C) showrunner and DM Zak Sabbath, who has an impressive ability to rub the tabletop community the wrong way.

(For my part, I had problems with none of these things – I want more women in gaming, I support ethical porn and sex-worker rights, and Zak can be blunt but is a really good guy.)

All New X-Factor is being cancelled at issue #20 because of sales being low (x) so we thought we would clear up what that means.

These are the numbers according to comichron.com (they post the figures from Diamond Comics Distributor. These are the guys responsible for putting hard copies in your hands!). Some things to keep in mind while you read ahead:

  • These numbers are estimates. Close estimates, but estimates nonetheless. They are quite valid, but do have some of that colloquial wiggle room.
  • Reorders, international sales (UK alone adds about 10% to the sales), and digital sales, and most bookstores/newsstands sales ARE NOT COUNTED IN THESE NUMBERS. (x)

For the month of January, issue #1 was ranked the 30th most sold comic, and issue #2 was ranked 57th (x). By February of this year, there were 47,643 copies of All New X-Factor #1. To put that in perspective, “Batman #27” was ranked 1 and sold ~115,492 copes, and "Uncanny X-Men #16" was ranked 17 and sold ~58,676 issues.

By March, the sales of the series were down by about 1.6 times.

In August, All New X-Factor #12 was in 110th place. Numbers for September have not been reported yet.

All New X-Factor #15 is scheduled to come out on October 22nd, so in about three weeks. A goal for issue #15 is to try to stay at the number we are now (so around 21.3k issues) and not dip further. After that, we have 5 more issues to make our statement with. I feel that if we can even begin to pull a steady 5% increase (adding 1,068 comics), we might be able to gain some traction. There might be a spike in issues sold for #17 & #18 because they are tie-ins for the AXIS event, but if we can increase it more from there, that could send a positive message.

Here are some steps you can take to keep this comic going:

  • Do you know where your local comic store is? Find out! Remember that Diamond Comics Distributor from earlier? They put out these huge catalogs that consist of comics from every large comics publisher and give you an order form to fill out. Fill out the form saying you want to get All New X-Factor #17 & #18. You can check it so that ANXF will be on your pull-list, so you’ll get the subsequent issues as well! Many local comic stores offer subscription services that give you a discount on titles you add to your pull-list. You could be helping save All New X-Factor AND getting a discount!
  • Are you driving by your LCS? Bring your friends and tell them to buy a copy. They will fall in love with the comic, too. Every issue counts!
  • Live too far away from a comic store? You can buy the comic digitally from Marvel here. You really want that hard copy in your hands? Mycomicshop has got you covered.

Remember every issue counts.

TL;DR? Just read what’s bolded for the gist of it.

#SaveANXF

Its already cancelled. It’s done. Over. Despite it sometimes the ONLY title I would buy that week because I knew the “Avengers: 2387458946384 titles could survive without my support that exact week, it didn’t help. I even bought more than one issue. I got my friends into the title because I would never stop talking about it. It didn’t change anything.

This is why I get mad at comics. I get SO MAD that something that isn’t one of the BILLION xmen of avengers team books can’t be kept running even with 20,000 readers.

I guess no one really cares.

Frankly, I blame Marvel for its cancellation. Marvel would LIKE the fans to think it’s their fault, but here’s a little rundown on why I think it’s actually Marvel’s fault.

X-Men: Days of Future Past came out this summer, while Pietro was on ANXF. During that time period, any reasonable company would’ve had him nice and prominent on the cover of a book like ANXF to get people to pick up the book if they had residual interest in the character due to the film. Marvel didn’t do that. If you check, he was on covers BEFORE DoFP, and covers several months AFTER DoFP, but not on any during the important time frame DoFP was in theaters.

Secondly, look what happened with All-New X-Factor #14. Lorna and Wanda spending time together as sisters is a huge deal. It’s something tons of fans have been wanting for a long time. Even if we ignored the interest in Lorna and Wanda as sisters, a character like Wanda appearing on ANXF for a story is still a big deal. Not only did Marvel not promote that issue one bit, but they even withheld the issue’s cover from the public until a week before the issue hit store shelves. The explanation given for this was “If it’s a double shipping month, Marvel only releases the cover of the second issue that month alongside the preview.” I don’t buy this, because Marvel’s shown plenty of willingness to show covers for many other big Marvel events well in advance.

Consider with this what the sales were for ANXF #13 and #14, compared to other double shipping months. All other double shipping months, the second issue sold less than the first issue. Here, even with no promotion by Marvel, ANXF #14 managed to sell more than ANXF #13. If Marvel had actually promoted ANXF #14, imagine how much it would’ve sold, and consequently what all other future issues would’ve sold as a result.

This doesn’t mean lack of promotion by Marvel was the sole cause of low sales. But, I think it was the biggest contributing factor, and if Marvel had just promoted it in cases like Pietro while DoFP was out or ANXF #14, the book would’ve sold enough to keep going. Instead, Marvel decided not to give ANXF the support it needed and deserved when it needed that support most.

We both loved the All-New X-Factor issue where Lorna and Wanda spend some free time together, and so remyxpietro created a wonderful continuation for it. Sisterly bonding! Action and adventure! Also shoes! And beer!

All hail remyxpietro for being the coolest partner ever ♥ I loved drawing a more light-hearted Wanda.

This is AWESOME. Excellent work to the both of you! I hope there’s more to come some time in the future, especially since Marvel’s not exactly forthcoming with providing much like this.

I recall you wanting Wanda to have a Magneto helmet, I myself have always wanted Lorna to have a Magneto helmet!

Lorna gets original style green repaint, Wanda gets one based on her tiara. And then they never get posessed by psionic jackasses ever again.

can we get one for Pietro too?

All Aerodynamic like.

Idk, I think he’d object quite strenuously to the idea of wearing any helmet, particularly that kind of one.

Could put caption on the back of it though.

“DO YOU LOVE ME NOW DADDEH?”

I’m going to draw this. No one can stop me.

you are a babe if you do that.

Aaaaaaaaand drawn. It’s kind of a grab-bag of costumes because reasons. Good ones. Mostly that some costumes are just more fun to draw than others. ^_^;;

Wanda Maximoff story by me and impeccable rngrn for FCE.

Nnothing would have happened if not for my wonderful Rin who agreed to collaborate with me; turned out we’re both lazy asses, yet still we managed to create this story about a Woman Who Deserved Better.

Rin is everything. Rin is an immensely talented artist. Rin is a lovely piece of ass who deserves all your praises. Rin is one and only; thank you so much for putting up with me and for bringing my ideas into life and creating this helluva beauty. ❤

What’s the difference here?

The first woman is a real human being. She controls her own body and has her own personality. She has control over her own actions and can make autonomous decisions in her life. She also has to directly deal with the people around her and the bigotry, stereotyping and harassment that she is exposed to. She is real, she has emotions, she has thoughts, and she has rights.

The second woman is fictional. She was created by other people who exert full control over her body, appearance and actions. Her sole purpose is to be literally bought and sold for the entertainment of an audience. She cannot make her own decisions, she cannot control her own body and she is not real. She is not responsible for her behavior or appearance: She is the product of the environment that she was created in.

The first woman, by virtue of being a human being who identifies with the feminist movement and acts in accordance to those beliefs, is therefore a feminist. She is actively participating in feminism and is choosing to dress herself in a manner of protest that best demonstrates that she alone controls her body, and that no others have a right to access her body without her consent. She is a multi-faceted person who has agency, and part of that agency includes the ability to look sexy while refusing to consent to her own dehumanization. Her actions are not only one small part of what makes her a person, but she is also participating within a cultural trend of protesting rape culture.

The second woman, because she is not autonomous and was designed by a series of outsiders, is sexist because she is the passive product of sexist content creators. She exists as an ornament. Her clothes were chosen as fan service so that she can be sexually available and gratifying at all times, most likely for straight male gamers. Her erotic appearance has little functional purpose other than to please an audience. And since she exists within an industry that is consistently criticized for ostracizing female participants and creating a large gap between the depictions of male and female characters, her appearance is simply one detail within a much larger array of sexist problems.

Get it?

omg thank you finally someone puts it into words

i’m sorry i have to disagree with you ( the creator of the image and the one who wrote the explanation above ). i consider myself a feminist, in fact i believe in equality whether in gender, race or religion, everyone should be treated fairly and just.

i disagree with the explanation above because of the picture chosen to represent a “sexist” and what’s wrong within the gaming industry currently. in my humble opinion a sexist is someone who believes one sex is superior to the other, and the objectification, discrimination of a person because of gender.

the character in the picture on the right, is a character named Quiet in the upcoming game Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain, she is a mute and a female sniper; and based on the words of her creators, Mr Yoji Shinkawa ( game leading mech designer , concept artist and art director) and Mr Hideo Kojima ( game director ) “i created her character as an antithesis to the women characters appeared in fighting games in the past who are excessively exposed, once you get to know her, you will realize the reason behind her actions ( in the game )…” . [source]

those who are long time fans of the series will know, everything created in the Metal Gear universe has a reason/(multiple reasons even) behind it, look at Metal Gear Solid 3, Eva and the Boss are such strong female characters that have such strong influence on the story, the Boss had an entire unit of super soldiers (who are all men by the way), under her command, they have unwavering loyalty and respect towards her, and even our protagonist have so much love and respect towards her. now how is that the creators are sexist ?

its not simply because of fan service too. simply saying this is a total disrespect to the people who worked hard for a few years, logging god knows how many working hours trying to make the best game they can. and you can’t just discount the characters existence by saying “since she exist within an industry that is consistently criticized for ostracizing female participants…. ”

there are a lot of characters whether in  movies or games created for fan service and are created solely for the pleasure of male gamers but i assure you that this character does not deserve this kind of label yet, not until we get to know her better when the game launches. and not till you understand her story. by simply labelling another character sexist without even knowing her, that’s unjust and dosen’t help at all.

i’m writing this as a worker in the games/entertainment industry, my coworkers and i, we work hard to bring these characters to life, don’t label our hard work with such a word till you fully understand it.

thank you for your time.

A man designed an over sexualized female character not JUST as fan service, but so he could end sexism in videogames!

Sexism is over thanks to this man! We can all go home now! Good job everyone. In particular the men.

*insert appropriately unimpressed gif here*

I’m gonna butt in where I probably don’t belong here since I have a few things I feel like saying.

A guy trying to make a feminist character is difficult because as a guy, he only has a vague idea of what women experience and think about the culture around them. You can only have a real idea of that if you’re a woman yourself. And in fact, this is why we need more women in the video game industry, and we need games that accurately depict what women experience in their day to day lives. It’s at least a little something to bring a little more understanding.

However, speaking as a guy, I think Quiet’s design is perfectly fine. I can understand why some people are upset by it, and the issues they raise about it, but in this case it’s a character that fits with the Metal Gear Solid universe and the way it’s always approached these things. My opinion would be different if MGS never had this kind of content before, or it doesn’t match how the character was meant to be when they were created.

Personally, if there’s anything regarding female representation in the Metal Gear Solid universe I think deserves complaint, it’s how poorly the Beauty and Beast Corps was handled in Metal Gear Solid 4. Leading up to the game’s release, there was a lot of excitement and buzz about what each of the women would be like and their backstories. There were theories about Crying Wolf being a quadruple amputee, or Raging Raven with burns all over her body, and the thought of all that used to point out the horrors of warfare at levels that were never covered fully in the MGS series. Instead, all four women had the sexy plugsuit deal, and their backstories and trauma they suffered were relegated to only a few paragraphs of post-battle summary from Drebin. As characters, the B&B really deserved more than the game gave them.
