Ret-conning Magneto as the Maximoff twins’ father (and possibly making them Inhuman) is a terrible idea for several reasons, marvelentertainment

  • If they’re Inhumans, it white-washes them, taking away their Jewish and Romani heritage that is a part of their characters. They’re also some of the only Romani characters in comics. Representation is so important. It’s 2014. Our media should be more progressive, not less so. We shouldn’t be having minority characters suddenly have their identities erased for the sake of a poor plot point.
  • Trying to make them not Magneto’s children (and/or Inhuman) for the sake of aligning the comics with the films is a terrible move. I, and many others, like that the comics and the films are different. The comics offer me something that the films don’t, and vice-versa. Film adaptations are, as we know, never going to be a direct adaptation of their source. And that’s fine. They’re two different mediums. They’re not meant to be. Taking two well-loved characters and messing with their history for the sake of the films isn’t going to make us love them more. It’s going to make us resent the MCU.
  • It literally makes no sense. Pietro looks like a younger version of Magneto, and why would he if he’s not his son? Wanda’s children are mutants. Pietro’s daughter, Luna, is half-human, which doesn’t make sense if the plan is to make the twins Inhumans. Plus, Pietro lost his powers along with all the other mutants in Decimation.
  • Their identities, for good or ill, are tied up in both being mutants and the struggles that gives them and being Magneto’s children. They’ve spent a large part of their lives trying to prove that they’re not like their father. It plays a big part in their character development and to say it was all a lie makes it feel like everything that past writers and stories have worked towards was just a waste of time.
  • There’s been so much good development between Pietro and Lorna in the All-New X-Factor series as they learn how to become siblings. It’s one of the best parts of that comic. And Wanda, in ANXF #14, started to try and bridge the gap between her and Lorna as siblings as well. And both of those developments have been so lovely and brilliant for all the characters involved. And by making them unrelated, that’s just throwing those developments away and saying, this meant nothing. Which is terrible, because it really has felt like it meant something.
  • In general, the twins’ story makes more sense, and is so much more powerful and interesting in terms of their development as people and their emotional journeys, if Magneto is their father. That’s why it was such a good move way back when it was revealed. And it’s not one worth ret-conning.

Axis 7 is a prime example of why spoilers are important. I didn’t tag anything spoilers. People need to know NOT to buy that issue, they need to know just what Marvel/Disney is doing. They need to be aware that a line is drawn and they have to decide if they are gonna cross it and still support that fucking company.

peppermonster:

I do not support Marvel/Disney and this is no longer a Marvel blog.

If they go through with their events in Axis 7, then I am done with them.

They have a chance to say “Wanda only said that to hurt Erik, it’s not actually true”

If they don’t seize on that given all the negative feedback, and they carry on with this bullshit, then I am saying goodbye to comics.

Which means I have…a few books (LotR and Harry Potter?) I can read over and over, but otherwise no fandom.

I’m honestly unsure what to do with my life at this point. Without comics, I’m not sure what other people do.

Just a quick note, you don’t have to stop supporting what you love about the Marvel universe while not supporting Disney and/or Marvel themselves.

That’s the beauty of fandom. You can draw fanart, write fanfics, make fan comics and dress up in fan cosplay while not buying anything Disney or Marvel have to offer. In fact, depending on how it’s approached, these things can minimize any damage Marvel tries to pull. You could continue to cosplay Wanda while a friend cosplays as Magneto or Lorna, and use that to emphasize their family ties and keep those ties visible for the kids growing up with comics right now.

I’m just throwing this out as a suggestion, not saying any of this “must” be done by any means. No matter what you do, I hope you’re still happy and enjoy yourself. 🙂

So you know there’s Marvel vs Capcom games? Do Marvel take lessons from Capcom on how to alienate their fanbase?

Nah, Capcom is moronic all by themselves.

Capcom is STARTING to learn the error of their ways only recently. For several years, every single action taken by Capcom was based on either ego or greed and absolutely nothing else. They did everything EXACTLY the same way as Disney is going about it right now.

Resident Evil? They threw away its survival horror roots to make it action-oriented, and put a massive emphasis on the male characters.

Mega Man? They scrapped EVERY SINGLE PROJECT they had while Inafune was at the company because of a rant and subsequent quitting by Keiji Inafune, former head of Mega Man, then blamed it on the fans. They had a Megaman Legends 3 planned, a game fans had been waiting a decade to see. First, they were planning to make fans pay for a DEMO to “prove they want it,” before deciding to punish Inafune by canceling it and claiming the fans “didn’t want it badly enough.”

Devil May Cry? They threw out a decade’s worth of continuity to pull a forced reboot nobody asked for through a Western company that repeatedly showed disdain for fans and the franchise itself, especially the main character.

They paid a big price for it, and a hell of a lot faster than I expected. I expected Capcom to feel it after a decade. Instead, it hit them after just a few years. They expected Resident Evil 6 to sell 10 million in the first month, then dropped the estimate to 7 million, but it still came up short at 5 million. DmC only made about 1-2 million at release. By 2013, Capcom was in it deep, with only $152 million in the bank.

That’s where Disney is headed. Disney is a huge corporate empire, and they have tons and tons and tons of properties to branch out and rely on, but people that make awful decisions in one place are guaranteed to do so in many, many places. It’s going to snowball. Disney may seem untouchable because they’re so big, but they’re not. Even corporate giants can take a fall.

Wanted to be a bit more optimistic

Marvel can break the Magneto family but the M Family fandom is still here.

And as long as we continue to make our headcanons, fanart and fanfic it doesn’t matter what Marvel says.

Yep. That’s the thing people need to remember in this. Disney and Marvel may hold the official rights to these characters, but it’s the FANS that matter. The fans can do whatever they want and Disney can’t do a damn thing about it.

What are they going to do, send everyone cease and desist letters for writing fanfic, drawing fanart, doing cosplays and making fan comics? If they do that, they’re begging for a scandal of epic proportions, and tons more consumers bringing the hammer down on them. It’s why such cease and desist stuff is almost entirely isolated incidents like the Anne Rice novels.

No matter what Disney does, the fans will preserve what they try to destroy. And eventually, someone will gain control at Disney or Marvel that can say “That was stupid, let’s fix this mess” and put things back the way they’re supposed to be.

Oh and let’s not forget that in every single AU the twins were still Magneto’s children.

  1. Marvel 1602
  2. X-Men Noir
  3. Mutant X
  4. Ultimate Universe
  5. Exiles
  6. Age of Apocalypse
  7. What If: The Quick and the Dead
  8. X-Men Fairy Tales
  9. Avengers Fairy Tales

Seriously… Plus take into account the x-men cartoons (which is how I was introduced to them), and a few videogames. Their family relationship is literally EVERYWHERE.

This retcon really feels like they pulled it out of their ass…just a few months ago, the twins made an appearance alongside their dad in “No more humans”. And it seems like nobody told PAD about this since he’s been building the bonds between Lorna and the twins (mostly Pietro) for the past year. Why push their relationship nonstop if you intend to undo it so suddenly?

I still hold a tiny shred of hope that they well remain a family, but as I’ve said before, Marvel pretty much lost me now. Fear not, I will continue posting scans, and we can all chuckle together at scans that reference their family because we now know it’s all a lie. Good job Marvel, destroying something that wasn’t broken.

To add to this, Magneto has been the twins’ dad in four cartoons:

  • X-Men the Animated Series
  • X-Men Evolution
  • Wolverine and the X-Men
  • The Superhero Squad Show

xmenthefanficseries:

Marvel is responsible for the Maximoff Retcon, not Remender. It is a part of Marvel’s ongoing cold war with FOX over licensing rights (cold war, pissing match, same diff).

It is also an attempt to pull their comics more in line with the movies which are more profitable for them at the moment. (So, basically, to bring in more readers they are alienating their old readers)

Rick Remender is still a craptastic writer who should never have been let anywhere near the comics in the first place.

My response is to refuse to buy anything Disney that doesn’t explicitly involve Polaris (since I’m a Lorna fan), and subsequently support anything Fox does with properties that originally came from Marvel even if it turns out to be terrible. I’m still iffy on whether or not I’ll see the Star Wars films, but I’m heavily leaning toward not seeing those anymore either.

Disney’s forcing this to happen, and they’re doing so because they’re greedy assholes that think treating fans and consumers with blatant disrespect like this is acceptable if it means hurting Fox (hint: it’ll only help Fox) or making a few extra bucks in a decade or two. The answer is to do the exact opposite of what Disney wants and make sure they make even less money. They don’t care about the comics, but they DO care about the films, and that’s where they’ll feel the hurt the most.

  • diamondknave said: You act as though marvel didn’t cock this shit up all the time, or that disney really has any input into the writing of a comic that’ll be retconned in three months do that everyone is dinosaurs.

Hopefully I’m doing this whole reply thing right. I really don’t know if I am, because I’m still learning how tumblr works.

What this comes down to is Disney fighting it out with Fox. Fox owns the film rights to the X-Men franchise, and Disney has an incredibly asinine perception of the world in which the comics are seen as a promotional tool. As in, they think if they fuck things up in the comics, that’ll somehow magically fuck things up for Fox by proxy, and not just make Disney look like the colossal assholes they are.

This is absolutely Disney trying to ruin a good thing because of their greed. Marvel does a lot of stupid stuff, I know because I’ve seen how they’ve treated Polaris, but this is one that Marvel has shown over the years that they don’t want to see either. They went out of the way to use and emphasize Wanda and Pietro as Magneto’s children (one event was called Children’s Crusade… without Lorna, because again, Marvel themselves can also be incredibly stupid), after all.

lorna-maximoff:

lol I’m not buying Marvel comics until they restate that Pietro and Wanda are Magneto’s kids what an ass pull retcon lol.

Damn right. This is mainly Disney’s fault, though, so don’t limit yourself to just the Marvel comics. Extend that to everything Disney that you can comfortably extend that to. Can you live without Star Wars? Then screw Star Wars. That’s the best mindset overall. Disney may not think the comics matter, but they sure as hell think their films matter.
