This is definitely meant to be Enchantress, not Polaris.

I have mixed feelings about every time I see people mistake Enchantress for Lorna.

On the one hand, I feel terrible for both Enchantress fans and for the artists/cosplayers that put so much work into things representing Enchantress only to have people mix up the two. I know I’d be very upset if it happened in reverse.

On the other hand, Polaris keeps getting shafted by Marvel, especially Brevoort and Remender over on the Avengers books. In the past 5 years, she’s been written mostly well on X-books she’s on, but she’s excluded from all crossovers, and any books she’s on are practically sabotaged (whether or not that’s Marvel’s intent) because Marvel won’t promote them. They didn’t even promote Lorna getting her origin story told in X-Factor #243 (after 40 years without an origin story), or Lorna spending time with her sister Scarlet Witch in X-Factor #14 after a decade apart. Meanwhile, during Axis, Marvel not only used Enchantress and promoted her, but tried to make her a “replacement” for Polaris alongside Scarlet Witch rather than actually respecting Enchantress and Polaris enough to use both of them for the distinct appeal each has.

I guess what I’m saying is, some small part of me gets a tiny bit of guilty pleasure out of these mix-ups given how Marvel has respect for Enchantress but seemingly not much for Lorna. Emphasis on the guilty part. After seeing Lorna kept hidden away for the past five years, never promoted, there’s a tiny bit of joy in seeing people know who Lorna is despite other characters that look similar to her receiving more of a push out of Marvel.

I sincerely look forward to the day when Marvel respects Enchantress and Polaris enough to use and promote both of them simultaneously, and that it can result in fans knowing the difference between them and appreciating each one’s unique traits.

I still love this piece. I commissioned it from MikazukiShigure back when Avengers vs X-Men was taking place. The intent was to essentially present what could have been during AvX if Marvel would stop trying to tear down the X-Men franchise over a film rights spat with Fox, acknowledge Lorna as an actual character worth use and respect, and put her potential with her sister to use.

We’re obviously not going to get that any time soon since Marvel is obsessed with throwing away a gold mine, but we could still see more of this in fan work until a decade or two from now when Marvel’s ready to actually show some appreciation and respect for IPs they don’t own the film rights to again.
