Lorna Dane, codename Polaris, is a member of the X-Men who happens to be the daughter of… Magneto (so she is ethnically Jewish). She’s been around since the late 60′s, and has magnetic powers like her father. (source of the art above is artist lyfaye on Tumblr)
“”Hands up, or these bullets are going to converge on you and fill you with more holes than the plot of a Transformers movie”
Lorna’s powers include manipulating metal, and the Earth’s magnetic fields, which allows her to fly. Basically if you’ve ever watched Magneto in an X-Men movie, you know what she can do.
I’ve seen her do that *snap* on multiple occasions (like here), so I like to think it’s her trademark lol. But she can also do fun things with her power (and let you know she’s a Harry Potter fan) like this
Considering the rest of her family includes Magneto and her two half-siblings Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch (Pietro & Wanda Maximoff), she’s the least well known of the four. She hasn’t been featured in the X-Movies, or many videogames, but she does appear a little bit in the 90′s X-Men cartoon and the 2009 Wolverine & The X-Men cartoon. (the gif below is from a set in this post)
Though in that show, she’s much closer with her father than she is in the comics. Ordinarily she’s not very close with him or her half siblings, and didn’t even find out for sure she was related to any of them until she was an adult, because she was raised by humans.
Fun fact: She wasn’t actually born a… greenhead? Greenette? Lol. Her hair was brown until her mutant powers manifested when she was a child and turned her hair green. But for years she dyed it brown so she didn’t stand out. Though even now, when people are annoying her about her hair, she might just give them a simpler explanation so they shut up
Polaris is one of my top 5 favorite mutants. Very cool and underappreciated. Kinda treated like the red-headed stepchild of the Marvel universe. You can check out my Polaris tag if you’re interested in seeing more of her.
Disclaimer: last year something happened in the comics that made the twins no longer related to Magneto, and therefore no longer related to Lorna, but it’s kinda bullshit so a lot of people ignore that lol (but here’s an explanation of that if you were curious)
Excellent rundown, I love every bit of it. 🙂 I don’t trust Marvel to acknowledge and respect her any time soon, but here’s to hoping we get more fan work to make up for what Marvel isn’t willing to give us!
ACTUAL FAKE GEEK GUYS ONLY SUPERFICIALLY FAMILIAR WITH WHAT THEY’RE POSTING ABOUT
Okay some responses are trying to correct me and say Harley Quinn “canonically” used sex to cheat her way to her degree. What yall actually mean is some hack shitlord neckbeard writers retconned this to be the case because they decided sexy blonde woman + doctor LOL MUST HAVE CHEATED WITH HER EVIL WOMANLY CHARMSHarley originates from Batman: The Animated Series where she was a serious, competent doctor and a genius, which is also backed up by other comic stuff I’ve seen so whatever turds wrote that other garbage they can huff their ow farts
She’s a fucking Ph.D in psychology and criminology. She’s literally one of the most intelligent people in her field which is WHY she got to work with the Joker in the first place. She’s INSANELY intelligent and often outsmarts Joker in her own plans. She’s done things to Batman that Joker can only dream of because she doesn’t bullshit around when it comes to planning to kill him. Who the fuck’s the dumbass to call her “sexy but stupid” as if she doesn’t dumb herself down enough just to be AROUND Joker. omfg I need a minute.
This however doesnt change the fact that she is a sociopath and codependent as hell on the Joker and their relationship shouldnt be romanticized.
Hold the phone, she canonically used sex to pass her classes and that has nothing to do with neckbeards, you fucking idiots. I love harley, I have that comic. The comic written by the same btas writers. Are you really calling those writers who wrote compelling female characters with fantastic back stories neckbeards because they gave her an unsavory past? She became a psychologist for money and fame, that’s why she wanted to interview the joker. But then she fell for him and that is the canonical story whether you like it or not.
Harley is very ditzy but she’s also smart as hell so really it didn’t matter that she used sex to pass her classes because she wasn’t interested in psychology for knowledge, but for fame. But she has proven to be intelligent in the btas series and later media despite her back story and that’s the point. Not to mention in the same story, she’s the one to figure out how to make Joker’s plan work. The writers made sure to show how she thinks differently and uses that to her advantage and you people want to act like that never happened.
If you refuse to acknowledge her canonical story because you think it’s sexist, you refuse to acknowledge a large part of what Harley is. She is manipulative and sharp and she knows how to get what she wants. Mad Love proves that.
It’s all in how you interpret different elements of her character history.
Harley is smart, including much smarter than the Joker. She was actually able to capture Batman, something the Joker is shown incapable of doing to the point that he gets pissed that Harley managed to do it.
But as we see in the original picture, a lot of people choose to ignore all of who Harley is to write her off as an idiot. They miss the whole point that 1) Harley is a hopeful romantic whose emotions can override her intellect, and 2) that the Joker didn’t merely manipulate a naïve girl as they want to believe, but that the Joker is menacing specifically because he can manipulate someone as intelligent as Harley into going along with him.
However, I’ll make one caveat: the “sexy but stupid” line may or may not accurately refer to what DC’s been turning Harley into since New 52. I stopped touching anything tied to DC once New 52 forced the stupid new “Harley Quinn” out there, the one that’s so far removed from her harlequin theme that she shouldn’t even be called by her codename anymore.
“Harley Quinn” as DC is using her nowadays is so far removed from who she actually is as a character that one of her creators, I believe Paul Dini, even openly said that he has no opinion on comic book Harley Quinn because she literally wasn’t anything close to the character he created anymore.
In any case, I was pleased with Convergence: Harley Quinn #1, and I’m looking forward to getting to read the next issue. Hopefully some day DC stops being stupid and brings her back for real.
MCU is gonna have 3 movies a year. MCU is looking to add another TV show. MCU is gonna have 5 Netflix series MCU is trying to have another animated show tie into the MCU.
JUST STOP MARVEL!
Look, I’m having fun with the MCU and all, but you don’t need to push it this much! At the rate you’re going, you’re gonna burn out and run out of content! No seriously, you’re about to do big stories like Civil War and Infinty Wars, but you’re gonna run out of fuel and material!
I disagree there’s decades of material for them to use. And if they want they can make original stories. They need to keep it coming!
Even so, most comics are just revisits of previous stories and reusing the same villains. They are gonna blow through stuff fast.
75 years of comic canon: OH NO! 10 MOVIES AND 10 SHOWS/NETFLIX SHOWS! THERE IS NOT ENOUGH CONTENT!
#PartsOfThisFandomAreIdiots
Wow. I wish other universes would expand too because I’m super enjoying some of these shows + movies. Like they are a nice reprieve from life.
Star Wars is doing it. They are releasing a Star Wars Episode every Christmas, and a tie-in every summer. So we are getting Episode 7 this winter, Rogue One in the summer, then Episode 8 in the winter, and they are of course releasing supplemental material via television shows.
And it’s AWESOME.
But, you know OMG HUMANITY WILL RUN OUT OF IDEAS FOR NEW MOVOES AND TELEVISION SHOWS AT THIS RATE. Am’I’right??
NO! That’s not awesome! That’s the opposite of Awesome! Episode 7 I’m excited for, but overloading everything with more Star Wars movies will just prevent original ideas! I’d rather get newer franchises than the same recycled ones! Star Wars shouldn’t have spin off films!
^this person is everything wrong with fandom.
Eating the same thing over and over again stifles creativity! I’d rather have newer franchises than constantly reliving stuff from the 80′s! Call me when you’re sick of all the same nostalgia being reused over and over again and are starving for something new.
Sure. I’ll call you AFTER Jurassic World, Mad Max Fury Road, Terminator Genisys, DBZ Fukkatsu no f….wait, no, I’ll never call you.
BYE!!!
I bet you loved all the Transformers movies too.
Ouch. Now that IS mean. I enjoyed the first one well enough. After that they were unwatchable. But I was never a transformers fan in the first place. I was all about Master of the Universe. Cars are laaaame. Riding giant magical green tigers is where it’s at.
Allow me to be annoying.
First and foremost, I want to point out that the obsession with making sequels can and HAS resulted in ideas for entirely new franchises getting forced onto existing franchises. This is how games like “Final Fantasy X-2,” “3rd Birthday” and the new “Tomb Raider” forced reboot came into being. People that don’t understand or respect the original material, but have ideas for new IPs they really want to work on and can’t get greenlit otherwise or else want boosted by name recognition, will force new IP ideas and characters where they don’t belong. They end up ruining the original franchise while simultaneously robbing the world of a potentially great new IP.
By contrast, most people into video games know what Dante and Devil May Cry are. The two are pretty major icons of gaming, and they wouldn’t exist if Hideki Kamiya hadn’t realized his ideas for a Resident Evil 4 were way too off the mark from Resident Evil and decided to turn them into Devil May Cry.
Secondly, what people are saying about too much Marvel out there is accurate. There is such a thing as oversaturation. We’re reaching it. I expect a lot of interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be dead by 2020.
Seriously, think about all the content out there in the world. With Marvel alone, you have three movies each year, plus Agent Carter and Agents of Shield, PLUS stuff like Daredevil. Then you have all of what DC Comics is doing. Then you have Sony’s Spider-Man films, which they’re recently reigning in on an MCU approach for now because Amazing Spider-Man 2 did poorly. You have the Fox films. These are only the things I know off the top of my head; there are other companies with other properties that want to build vast cinematic universes too.
I’m not even factoring in stuff like video games. If a person likes more than one franchise, say they like Marvel but then they also like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings and those franchises do a lot too, how are they going to stay on top of everything in all the stuff they like simultaneously?
The MCU is riding high because they’re doing something new and different with movies, but they’re using up every ounce of it right this second. Once this approach is all used up, they’re dead in the water.
