Gamergate started as a 4chan op conducted by /pol/ and /r9k/ to harass Zoe Quinn, eventually acquiring the label Gamergate from Adam Baldwin. There are archives and screenshots of them discussing the campaign and how they needed to push the claim it was about “ethics” or various wrongs Quinn supposedly committed or it would die. The #Burgersandfries channel shows people discussing harassment of Zoe Quinn, being openly misogynistic, discussing doxxing, and debating whether or not they should drive her to suicide. (with the ones against saying it would be politically bad for them, not wrong) This is present even in the version of the logs they themselves released.

The deceptive, manipulative lie that it was about “ethics in games journalism” or “protecting gamer culture” was entirely a cover story for a harassment campaign that started with Zoe Quinn and moved on to other targets that were insufficiently right-wing and excessively feminist or progressive for the tastes of literal fascists – /pol/ is a well-known haven of fascists and neo-nazis.

Gamergate is not, was not, and will never be about anything but the harassment of political enemies.
