Chinese fandoms are currently experiencing an actual Purge right now. Every fandom. Accounts are getting banned, all shipping wars has been put on hold. Everyone’s hiding their porn and moving them to ao3.
There’s reward money involved. A recent update to censorship law raised the maximum reward for reporting illicit online materials to 50k yuan (7000 USD), so some people are reporting porn like crazy right now, and apparently, BL fandoms have been especially targeted, where some even more tame things got maliciously misreported.
Anyway, it’s a mess. Content creators are just disappearing off the face of the internet left and right. Expect an influx of Chinese porn fics on AO3.
Well… if there’s one thing out of this mess… nothing bands warring ships/fandoms like censorship…
Hey guys, if some awesome person in China translated your fic into Chinese or created fan art, you really should spread the word! This could affect someone you know!
This is also a call out to all you fuckwits that repost art on Tumblr, twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. Your negligence hurts people.
^^^
This is literally shitty and it has become worse and worse
Hopefully it will stop before long but just take care of how yiou take your stances on ao3 or what’s happening with Tumblr
A chinese homoerotic novel writer is sentenced to 10 years to prison because of “illegal publication”* and “spread of obscene materials”. After that, China government set up bounty for reporting “illegal publication”. Everyone on weibo, lofter etc. is deleting thier posts.
China is using this act as a way of controling the freedom of speech, it’s not just a matter of “no homo”. They just use the fandom content creators as an easy target and a way to scare people off from writing and publishing things the government doesn’t like.
China is living the Nineteen Eighty-Four novel. Please don’t post chinese fan works, especially not with their original chinese artists/writers right now. You could literally ruin their life.
* in China every book has to be approved by the government before
publication. Anything against the government or with “the wrong idea” will be banned. Their government didn’t pay too much attention to fan books before, but in recent years, they are tightening their grip on their people. Fandom and their activities as a whole has become a target because 1) fandom and their creative community make self-publishing a thing and China doesn’t like that the people know it’s easy to print stuffs (to spread unwanted information/ideas etc. 2) fandom and their creative community is the easiest and obvious target because of the general anti LBGT+ envirnment, general public will support the gornment for “cleansing the society from obscenity” withouth thingking about 1)
a couple months ago i re-opened my etsy shop because we’re having money troubles. about 2 weeks ago i sold a $65 item, but today when i went to look at my balance i had negative money. why? because etsy had automatically opted me into their “boosted posts” marketing feature, which costs $1 per day. i had to go find the option and turn it off manually.
etsy is opting people into paid marketing without their permission. if you use the site, make sure you aren’t getting charged.
And some people wonder why I’m so fiercely opposed to Havok forced on Polaris.
This series was initially reported as a Scarlet Witch series. Now, it’s actually a Vision and Scarlet Witch series, with Vision taking first name rights.
Before anyone says it. Yes. I’m completely and utterly aware that there was a comic book with this same title. I’m fully aware the reason they’re going with this duo and this title is because of that history.
That’s my entire point.
Something being old doesn’t make it instantly good. Having a history in the comics doesn’t mean it needs to be done that way, if at all. There’s no reason Marvel couldn’t have made this Scarlet Witch without Vision, or put Scarlet Witch first.
When I argue against Havok forced on Lorna, it’s for multiple reasons. One of those reasons is because I know something just like this could easily happen to her. Scarlet Witch is a character with interest separate from her dynamic with Vision, but in this situation, that interest is being used as a way to draw people in to something where Vision comes first. I’m not keen on seeing the same treatment happen to Lorna down the line if I can say and do things to prevent it.
its worse here because they whitewashed her, changed everything about her powers and kept the one part everyone wished they wouldn’t
Take a female character, rip away her heritage and background, swap out the power core to her identity, and then put her beneath another character. Exactly the sort of thing that shouldn’t happen to any character, and which I’m certainly gonna try to keep from happening to Lorna if I can.
unfortunately theres not much we can really do to prevent it otherwise we’d probably have already done it for the maximoffs, this is the main reason why i dont care for comic book adaptations and comic books as a whole anymore they do this to like every Asian character (Maximoffs as previously mentioned, The Ancient One, Nightwing, The Al Ghuls and I could go on) and I’m always like wow could have seen someone like myself on screen but nope apparently
obviously Lorna doesn’t have those issues as she’s got no canonical cultural background aside from being Magneto’s daughter but you see how when characters who are canonically part of an ethnic minority get treated so obviously comics and their adaptations would have to work on focusing on that first if we want to make sure something like having a Polaris on screen that doesn’t center around a character who apparently can’t stand on his own.
In Lorna’s case, I think there’s a higher chance of avoiding these kind of problems compared to Wanda.
Wanda had more of a spotlight on her where these sort of issues were presented as acceptable or good, gradually building across decades.
With Lorna, though, all of the things done to her were mainly because people at Marvel didn’t like or respect her. There’s less “I’m a huge fan of this thing they did and will defend it to the death” going on. The spotlight on Lorna’s also come on very suddenly. Not enough time for Marvel to make it look like those things were somehow good.
That, and just in general I think the effort to prevent such things is worthwhile even if it seems like it won’t go anywhere. Maybe it actually will result in good things. And if it doesn’t, maybe it’ll trickle down so that some other writer or some other character benefits.
I agree that starting with comics is the answer, and that there are a lot of problems that need fixing. I think most of them can and should be dealt with simultaneously.
sure but I think you missed my point that the trickle down thing will work better if they focused on racial representation first.
I got that, but what I was trying to say is that I think multiple things can be dealt with at the same time. Though if we had to prioritize then I agree with you; I’ve noticed the problems of how female characters are treated (lack of female hero toys, no female-led films for a long time, etc) get a lot more attention than how characters of color are treated (how The Mandarin was handled in Iron Man 3, whitewashing the twins, etc).
