Marvel Legends – POLARIS!

Polaris has always been one of my favorite X-Men. I remember being in my hometown comic shop as a kid and seeing a new Jim Lee X-Men poster the creepy owner had just hung up. The characters were all the typical mutants you would expect to see, but then off to the side was this green-haired beauty looking stern with crossed arms. I was in awe and immediately asked who she was (I was a single-minded 11 year old). In all my reading of Classic X-Men and the current X-titles, I had somehow completely missed the monochromatic estranged daughter of Magneto. She had the look, the abilities, and lineage to become an easy obsession for me. Which she did in spades. Unfortunately the Marvel writers seem to treat her like a punching bag. Between being perpetually depowered, brainwashed, and having mental breakdowns, her character never really gets a chance to shine. But I still see amazing potential in her. Let’s check out this long-overdue Marvel Legends figure below!

Major Marvel Comics Shakeups?? Rumor Mill! – The United States of Nerd

X-Factor is going to be revived as the replacement for “Mercs For
Money”. Deadpool will be fronting the group, which will feature members
of the PAD run (Strong Guy, Havok, Polaris, Wolfsbane).

This is a rumor. As a rumor, it could be complete bullshit someone made up. It could also be true, but plans could have changed.

I’m giving that disclaimer before I write remarks based on the assumption that the rumors are true.

If X-Factor is revived and Polaris is on it, the following criteria is the ONLY way I’ll read it.

  • Polaris is the leader.
  • Polaris is treated with respect (meaning, not like she was treated with All-New X-Factor #2-6).
  • Polaris gets to take part in the broader Marvel universe, especially major events (e.g. she should fucking be in the upcoming Generations event)

If any of these criteria is not met, I will not read it, and I will continue to boycott everything Disney and Marvel.

These same criteria apply if it’s not X-Factor, but a team that has both Polaris and Havok on it.

Marvel, mainly at Tom Brevoort’s behest, has spent every year since 2009 undermining Polaris and any development she’s given. In 2014, Marvel sabotaged and refused to promote All-New X-Factor where she was its leader until they cancelled it at issue #20. Since the end of 2015, 616 Polaris has been completely absent from everything Marvel and only alternate universe/alternate future versions of her have been used. Sparingly. Very brief cameos.

Marvel, and by Marvel I really mean Brevoort because I know he’s the actual guilty party here, doesn’t get to do this shit without consequences. I’m not going to act all grateful and fawning and ass-kissing about getting Polaris back in something after Marvel (which again, really translates to Brevoort) went out of the way to treat her like shit.

If Marvel can’t actually make up for decades of mistreatment and misuse, and the past decade of constant deliberate sabotage at Brevoort’s behest, then Marvel and by extension Disney can continue to get fucked. I’m not going to reward them for robbing me of a priceless treasure, withholding it from me for a year just to spite me, then bringing it back as damaged and tarnished as they can make it.

Bring Polaris back in the condition she was in when you forced her into limbo, or better. If you’re not going to do that, then you don’t deserve money or support. Money and support are rewards for showing care and respect. I’m only going to provide those things to people and companies that are capable of demonstrating those values.

LEGION Inspired Weird Rare X-MEN

Lorna Dane/Polaris

Magneto’s daughter – that should be enough to explain why she made this list.

The green haired beauty inherited her father’s power. Lorna was a
longtime girlfriend of Havok (Alex Summers) which led to heartbreak and
humiliation. Alex left Lorna at the altar setting off hidden trauma.
Lorna was once possessed by a psychic entity called Malice, who ran
Mister Sinister’s Marauders for years even leading attacks against the
X-Men. Polaris survived a Sentinel attack on Genosha that killed
millions. Lorna even lost her power until Apocalypse restored her as one
of his Horsemen. Manipulated by mind control, traumatic disaster
survivor, bad romances and Magneto’s daughter – the Mistress of
Magnetism is a fascinating powerhouse.

X-MEN Universe TV Series Gets Pilot Order, But Which Mutants Will Join Up? | Nerdist

Here’s Polaris’ entry out of the list of five.

One of the few actual X-Men team members who has yet to appear in any form on film, Lorna Dane has the power of magnetism, and is actually the daughter of Magneto (although he didn’t raise her, and this was not revealed for years). In the comics, she was the seventh member to join the X-Men, and although she didn’t stick around for long, she later joined spin-off series like X-Factor. Her inclusion in the show would make a ton of sense, because magnetism is simply a cool power that can be used inventively on a regular basis, and as Magneto’s daughter, she carries a certain weight story wise. Also, she has green hair, and green hair is just cool.

40 X-Men Characters Who Haven’t Appeared in the Movies But Should

Here’s Polaris’ entry.

Polaris

First appearance: X-Men #49 (1968)

Created by: Arnold Drake, Don Heck, Werner Roth, and Jim Steranko

Wow, that’s some serious talent that created Polaris. Polaris is one of the oldest X-Men characters yet to appear in a film, but let’s face it, it’s Lorna Dane’s lineage that make her potential inclusion in a future movie so compelling. Magneto’s children, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch will soon be everywhere thanks to Fox and Disney. But there is one child of Magneto left, and only Fox has her.

Havok was introduced to great effect in X-Men: First Class and fans want more. Polaris and Havok are one of the longest standing power couples in X-Men lore and that bond would make for some story fodder for a future film. Since the films handle Magneto’s powers so well, there might as well be two Masters of Magnetism.

Mutant Love: The 15 Greatest X-Men Couples

So. Polaris and Havok is listed under #7. I have a problem with this couple with its history ending up on this list. The article also completely disregards the actual circumstances of certain events in their relationships. I’m going to explain.

When Polaris was introduced, she quickly became a feminist character with an interest in mutant rights, as compared to a Jean that was more meek at the time. When Claremont started writing the X-Men, he treated her well, but Polaris and Havok leaving the X-Men was basically written up as Havok’s decision with Polaris doing it for no actual reason of her own beyond repeating what he said.

Over time, Claremont’s depictions benefited Havok while kicking Lorna down. You’d get scenes of her begging for Havok to save her from Sabretooth, or Lorna hanging around at home and washing dishes for “her man” and talking about how she “struck gold” while he gets to do whatever he wants. Basically, Claremont made it so that unless Lorna is under someone’s control, she’s a stereotypical domestic housewife type for Havok.

Their dynamic got better after Claremont was no longer writing the couple. Much, much better. Writers started letting Lorna be her own character, which has been an absurdly difficult uphill battle.

But this article tries to make it sound like the Claremont era was somehow a good depiction of their relationship. It wasn’t. If it was, you would see them everywhere as a “power couple” within X-Men and Marvel comics, a household name in fact much like Jean Grey and Cyclops. If their relationship in the Claremont era was in any way good, it wouldn’t have taken over 40 years for Lorna to have her origin story told, or to get to lead a team of her own. The two wouldn’t be tossed into limbo constantly to this day, especially not Polaris.

I’m NOT saying there are no possible good qualities to their relationship. I’m saying whatever good qualities exist, they’re buried under everything about the relationship that was handled very poorly by Claremont. I’m saying if a writer wants to explore their relationship, any rekindling of it has to happen with them treated as equals and Lorna getting a LOT of support as her own character. Not some hanger-on to Havok’s life and stories.

Last thing to mention. The entry claims Polaris and Havok split up for the puirpose of joining separate teams, and tries to frame it as if the decision was mutual. That’s not the case. Havok left Polaris. He did it after the X-Factor arc (starting around #243) where she found out about her past and “went crazy” (I can’t think of a better way to write it right now; sorry). He did this while she was unconscious instead of waiting for her to wake up.

All-New X-Factor did establish that he still cared about her even after he broke up with her. He asked Pietro to spy on Lorna for him and keep her safe. But the breakup wasn’t mutual. And personally, I think it’s good for Polaris that they aren’t together right now. But I’d be lying if I didn’t note exactly how it went down.

Cullen Bunn Sale! – Comics by comiXology

There’s a one day Cullen Bunn sale on Comixology. This is relevant for Polaris fans because it includes Magneto #18-21, the final arc and the one that includes Lorna alongside her father.

Unfortunately, the sale does not include Secret Wars: House of M (IMO among the best treatment of her recently; Bunn co-wrote/helped with Dennis Hopeless on #2-4 but not #1 which was all Hopeless) or the recent Deadpool and the Mercs for Money issue (cause it’s recent).

Improbable Previews: Marvel Gets The News About DC Digital Codes In Deadpool And The Mercs For Money #8 – Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movie, TV News

I got clued in on this by, once again, @lordtimeblogposts! Feel free to get mad at him for being awesome.

Also, this page. Which is funny, and Domino perfectly represents the way Marvel thinks about and treats Lorna. Lorna is hella marketable, the real problem is Marvel pretending she isn’t and sabotaging what few opportunities they do give her because they have a hate-on against her.

Marvel knows Polaris is marketable, too, otherwise they wouldn’t have tried to pull this Axis cover.

Or tried to replace her with this after the forced retcon on the Maximoffs’ parentage.
