taking a break from work to bring you – more rare Polaris comic images! And a comic review. This one is Doctor Strange and Sorcerer Supreme #69, published in 1994.
Pencils by David Brewer, story by David Quinn. It’s shit. The story involves Polaris and Forge investigating
an “aetheric doppleganger, the elemental magick equivalent of a robot” created by Doctor Strange and creatively named “Strange.” This is yet another episode of Polaris being forcibly possessed by a villain (Strange) in what amounts to a thinly veiled and poorly handled rape metaphor. Worse yet she begs for pity for her attacker at the end and berates Forge for saving her. It’s offensive, poorly designed and executed shit and you should not buy it. A few images are below the cut in case you ever wanted to make a compilation of artwork by male comic artists that objectify women and also don’t really have a good grasp on anatomy. There’s a single nice shot of her eyes though, which I’m placing above the cut so you don’t have to look at the rest if you don’t want.
Yeah, Marvel has a really bad habit of doing awful things to Lorna and trying to pretend what they’ve done is good, progressive and respectful to the character in any way.
I’ve never read this comic, but it sounds like it’s typical of Marvel around this time. It’s why I get touchy any time it looks like Marvel’s on a nostalgia kick for the 70s, 80s and 90s. They never understand that some parts of those time periods were actually bad. Wanting to revisit bad storylines from those times and rectify past mistakes, that’s good. Getting nostalgic and repeating past mistakes while acting like they were good all along, bad.
