What I’m about to do is going to sound a lot like bitching, that’s because it is.
These are the character cards for that deck of playing cards I found in my closet today. And by God…everyone besides WOLVERINE has either 1, or at most two cards.
Really? Really? Wolverine has five cards to himself, two of which are an alternate costume. Now I’m not saying I hate Wolverine the character, because I don’t. He’s great. It’s just I would rather have a Nightcrawler card or Iceman or Polaris or any other X-Men character than have FIVE cards of just Wolverine because there are other cool characters out there.
Rant over. These cards are cool, but I just wish there was different X-Man for each card instead of Wolverine being shoved down our throats. It’s REEEEAAAALLLY noteworthy to me how these cards include Havok and Banshee, but not Polaris. I mean, Lorna was the first female X-Men character to join after Jean, and she was introduced before Havok, but nope. Can’t have her in the cards.
Wolverine has been ridiculously overexposed for way too long. They need to let him step back and give other characters a chance to shine.
And as much as I would love for Lorna to get more exposure, I have to admit, she’s a pretty obscure character, so it makes sense to leave her out. It doesn’t make sense to leave Nightcrawler out, though. He’s so much more well-known and loved than Havok or Banshee!
The thing is, Polaris is only obscure because Marvel chooses not to give her any chances to stand out. The few times they have, it wasn’t promoted very heavily (All-New X-Factor), or it got abruptly canceled (Wolverine and the X-Men, Exiles).
I’m confident that if they gave her a real shot and did things right, she’s be an amazing breakout character. Marvel just has a perception of her that they’re comfortable keeping locked in place.
