yes! it is so! the girl is flesh of my flesh…blood of my blood! hers shall be the power and glory known to no other woman. for she is the daughter of magneto!
After Havok leaves Lorna in New Mexico, she gets ambushed by the Marauders, possessed by Malice, and turned into the evil version of Polaris that is one of the more notorious X-Men villains. We’ve seen Malice possess people before, but her possession of Polaris lasts many years. When I started reading X-Men comics in 1988 Polaris had already been turned into Malice, and this was the only version of the character that I knew. It’s kinda tragic, but at least we don’t have to watch her and Havok slobber all over each other anymore, and at least Polaris’s character becomes something more prominent than a quiet trophy girlfriend for Alex Summers. (Uncanny X-Men #219 – July 1987)
Realistically, though, the way Claremont wrote Lorna was terrible in a two-pronged fashion.
Since Lorna was possessed by Malice, that means characterization belongs to Malice and not Lorna. However, over time things ended up such that the actual good moments were attributed to Malice, and the moments where the character looks weak or pathetic got attributed to Lorna.
That’s not how it should be, but that’s how it ended up with Claremont.
He’s reiterated his spiteful attitude toward Lorna herself with the Zaladane arc, when he wrote her on Genosha (compared to other writers he wrote her well there), on X-Men Forever, etc. Any rare moment he allows Lorna to be powerful, he throws in a caveat to undermine it (possessed by Malice, or on X-Men Forever her being really mad Havok got hurt and only with the help of an AU Storm, etc).
I only say all this cause evil version of Polaris doesn’t really describe what Claremont was trying to do to Lorna here, and he really doesn’t deserve much credit given his intent. The good to come out of it is in spite of the bad intended, rather than as a result of actual good intentions.

Congratulations…on figuring out you’re one of the bad guys. So what? If you would have thought about it a little longer, you wouldn’t have destroyed so many lives? Huh?! You want forgiveness? Ask the little boy, who I strapped into a bus, while he screamed begging to join his mommy in prison where you sent her? You know what, ask the hundreds of families whose lives you and your friends ruined? Don’t ask me!
