whatadouche-bag:
Today is not about the douchebag. Today I want to talk about something different. I want to talk a little bit about who Polaris is.
(I’m dedicating this to (Polaris) people from ComicVine such as LordOfAllHumans (and a few others) who say Polaris is not recognizable… sounds funny guys, yes, I know but that’s what the troll said.
So, who’s Polaris? Lorna Dane? Green-hair Mistress of Magnetism? Any relation? Any team affiliations? Any abilities?
Lorna Dane AKA Polaris the green-hair Mistress of Magnetism is an X-Men since day 1. Who also is Magneto’s daughter and has 1 sister, 1 brother, and with 4 cute nephews and nieces. And all have super, cool, awesome powers. Plus they are all mutants (and inhumans).
Is she recognizable? I mean, is that a question to the obvious answer? Check on the images I posted above me and ask yourself if she is. I say FUCK yeah she’s recognizable and very well known. She is the Mistress of Magnetism who can generate magnetic energy pulses, create force fields, manipulate the Earth’s magnetic field, and allow herself to fly. By concentrating, Polaris can perceive the world around her solely as
patterns of magnetic and electrical energy. She can perceive the natural
magnetic auras surrounding living beings as well (Ain’t this sounds familiar?). She has bright green
hair, the first indication of her mutation (which mean……she still a mutant DUH!).
Briefly in her history, Polaris lost her magnetism power, but gained the
ability to absorb negative emotions from the environment and use it as
strength, endurance, invulnerability, and the ability to temporarily
increase her height and mass. She eventually lost these additional powers and her original magnetic powers returned.
By The Way, Team Affiliations are……………………
1) X-Factor (Serval Industries) (She was a Leader)
2) X-Factor Investigations (She was also a Leader)
3) Starjammers
4) X-Men
5) X-Factor
6) Defenders for a Day
7) The Twelve
8) Acolytes
9) Horsemen of Apocalypse
10) Marauders (also lead the team)
11) Hysteries (Fantastic Force)
12) Exiles Vol.2
13) Academy of Tomorrow
And a few others that I can’t recall, but her majority teams was the X-Men and X-Factor……no question.
So, is she recognizable? I guess LordOfAllBullShit failed the trolling.
Before I say anything else, I want to start by saying I’m completely against badmouthing other people and calling them names. It’s entirely possible to argue against the claims of a person you disagree with without calling them a “troll” and similar names. And of course, I’m only going by how it’s framed here because I don’t use ComicVine and haven’t seen his remarks myself – I might have more to say if I saw those remarks.
In any case, this is a good rundown of how long Lorna’s been around and ultimately her importance to X-Men history. I did something similar when I used to post on CBR to explain why she should’ve been on X-Men anniversary covers – she was included on group photos for the X-Men franchise for at least three decades as an important part of it.
There are two factors to take into account here: how recognizable she is, and how much use she gets.
In terms of how recognizable she is, she’s really lucky – people are more likely to mistake Enchantress or any green-haired woman for being Lorna than the other way around, as far as I’ve seen. Her iconic costume and her signature green hair have become tied to intricately to her that any Marvel character (and even some non-Marvel characters, like Aphrodite IX) with those traits has a chance of being mistaken for Lorna.
So, she’s doing great on recognizability.
But then there’s use, which is improving but has a rocky history with some bright and some obscure moments.
If you’re only going by whether or not she existed in the comics, then yeah, she had lots of use, but you also have to look at all mediums (video games, cartoons, etc) and where, when, and how much.
The great news is that she got her first real video game cameo in Marvel vs Capcom 3, and then first notable playable video game appearance in 2013 with Lego Marvel Super Heroes (good game, I highly suggest it), but she didn’t show up in any games until then.
More great news, she had a big part in the Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon, but she didn’t appear in Evolution and only showed up for a couple episodes of the 90s animated series.
Sadly, she has no live-action representation yet. Hopefully fandom can get her there with enough shows of support.
Lastly, right now is probably the best she’s had for representation in years at Marvel – she’s on the Magneto solo, she has AU cameos in books like Starlord and Kitty Pryde and MODOK Assassins, and her House of M counterpart is going to be part of the Secret Wars House of M miniseries. She also had a great stint in major X-Men and Marvel wide events from the late 90s to mid-00s, and occasional involvement in big X-Men storylines before that. Oh, and AU versions of her had great moments around 2008 and 2009, in comics like Exiles.
Unfortunately, she’s never been given the kind of exposure Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, etc have received, hasn’t been part of many Marvel-wide events, and was left out of X-Men franchise wide events from 2009 until last year. If you go up to someone and ask “Do you know Storm,” they’d know who she is; she’s a household name. But if you asked if they know Polaris, most wouldn’t be able to tell you – yet.
So, she’s in a tricky place. She’s mistress of her domain for her aesthetic, and hardcore comics fans or casual fans of specific characters (e.g. Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Iceman, Havok) may recognize her right away, but the average person who doesn’t really get into comics may not know who she is yet.
