(Big Brother Narrator voice): It’s day two in the Magneto family fandom household and everyone is still crying over the utter stupidity of Marvel’s hamfisted retcon.
A story that is over 30 years established, a pair of twins who only learn once they are adults who their true father is, the struggles of being a hero with the shadow of a villainous father casts doubt on their loyalties? Retcon that all for the sake of making more money with their new movie?
CALM DOWN EVERYONE! I’m not talking about Star Wars, just Avengers! Man, could you imagine what a long established fandom would do if someone retconed their whole backstory like that? Take away those defining moments? Destroy years of canon and head canon and erase the entire dynamic of their unique family struggle?

When they were together, blood or not, he WAS their father. They WERE his kids. The events that passed aren’t being retconned. They’re not being erased. If you lived your adulthood thinking someone was your parent and years later find out they’re not, does that make the times you had with them get erased from your memory?
Who knows how it happened. Maybe after M-Day Wanda subconsciously changed their heritage to piss him off and distance them from Magneto. Which would actually be pretty cool in my book.
Besides. We all know this is because of the Fox/MCU Cold War. And it will most likely be “changed back” later down the road.
1) they wont be Inhumans because thats NOT what they are doing with the MCU, Kevin said flat out that was not the case, and if they WERE Inhumans that would make Luna not Pietro’s biological daughter, and I don’t think Marvel would do that.
2)No, none of this is “cool” it is fucking bullshit. THE MOVIES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO INFLUENCE THE COMICS! Its SUPPOSED to be the other way around! If something doesn’t work in the movies, for whatever reason, that does NOT MEAN going into the comics and changing shit! Especially something as HUGE as this. This isn’t a different costume, or a slight variation on how they got powers. This is the complete bastardization of these characters.
and yes, it DOES negate those old books and old stories. it casts all those stories into a different context. It takes away ALL MEANING behind House of M. It takes away ALL MEANING and the ENTIRE POINT of Children’s Crusade.

somebody deliberately poisoned the air on the 9th floor of the hotel with chlorine gas at about 12:40 in the morning. thousands of people were evacuated from the hotel (not all of them were there for FurFest) and nineteen people wound up in the hospital as a result of the poisoning (source)

This happening to anyone for any hobby is awful. It doesn’t matter what a person thinks about furries, an attack like this is wrong. It would be wrong if this happened at a Democratic or Republican convention, it would be wrong if it happened at a BDSM club, and it’s wrong here. Nevermind the people that aren’t furries that were affected, even if the building was nothing but furries, it would be wrong.
It’s not like its hard for new readers to grasp differences between adaptations. I don’t think anyone will struggle with the Maximoffs being Magneto’s kids. It’s not like Bucky’s backstory had to be retconned because of the Cap film. The pissing contest between disney/marvel and fox doesn’t help either. Exactly! Just ugh people blame Fox for the crap Marvel’s doing but tbh how is it Fox’s fault that Marvel is sabotaging the X-Men? Very true in regards to Bucky he was quite a departure from 616 yet they didn’t retcon him to being the same age as Steve. I may have to buy Ghost Rider in Trade format and no the multiple asks aren’t a bother 🙂
I’m actually going to be giving Fox money I wouldn’t have been giving them as a result of this. Days of Future Past will be the first X-Men film I watch since X2, and I’ll see Fantastic Four even if it’s the worst film ever made.
I actually own this. The original pencils for this page. It’s by Clay Munn from Magneto Not a Hero, and @hopelessromanticgeek got it for me this past #NYCC as my Christmas present. So…this probably puts into perspective for you as to why I might be just a little bit upset over what @marvel and Rick Remender have done with Axis 7 and them retconing this family all because of their fucking shit movie.

I agree that Lorna should’ve been in this, though that doesn’t change at all the spirit of Wanda and Pietro as Magneto’s children and how awful it is that Disney forced this change. Disney’s higher-ups didn’t think of anyone but themselves.

Thank you for the explanation. Wow, I really can’t believe Remender still has a job and is writing crossover events when the guy writing All New Ghost Rider is at a risk of cancelation. You’d think after multiple out cries from fans and immense readership drops they’d get rid of Remender. Hopefully this will be the last straw. It’s ridiculous to try and follow the mcu cannon in the comics. I thought it was already established as a separate universe. Marvel needs to get it together.
I don’t understand the logic behind alienating the comic fanbase for the sake of the movie fanbase there’s a bit of overlap sure but still they’re mostly two different fanbases with the same characters taken in different directions.
Changing Pietro and Wanda in the comics isn’t going to draw in new readers, and it isn’t going to make us the comic fans want to see the movie or support the MCU.
Yeah man screw Remender, it’s not his fault for this retcon but it is his fault for framing killing the Red Skull as a bad thing aka “Hate breeds Hate” Mentality the man just comes off as a Nazi sympathiser.
I feel bad for the All New Ghost Rider writer Felipe Smith, writers like that deserve more focus in the comic industry if nothing else at some point I will buy all of All New Ghost Rider as I really like Robbie Reyes.
The really exciting and fun part about how stupid Disney is about this is how the REAL damage is going to be reflected in coming Marvel films, and to an extent all things Disney will suffer as well.
Disney didn’t think of the actual cost. In all likelihood, they expected they’d lose at most a hundred or so really hardcore comic book fans, fans they figured the films would immediately replace.
They didn’t account for what a move like this symbolizes to ALL comic book fans. They didn’t account for how fans of related characters would react. They didn’t account for the ripple effect in which a fan of Wanda who refuses to see any Marvel films may result in 1-4 MORE people that won’t bother by proxy, whether because they don’t want to go alone, because they don’t want to support something that really upsets that Wanda fan, or because the Wanda fan has made a good case for why Disney and the coming films suck and aren’t worth seeing. I know at least one person that won’t be seeing the next Avengers film because I’m not going.
This whole stunt is an exercise in stupidity straight out of Disney’s lack of a brain trust.

I hadn’t realized this before, but now that someone mentioned it, this is stunning. I’m floored. The most important time of the year for people of Jewish faith, and Marvel rips that heritage out of their two most prominent Jewish characters. It’s like Disney went out of their way to depress and piss off as many people as they possibly could.
Hanukkah is far, far from being the most important time of the year for us Jews. It’s not even a holiday of biblical origin. Please don’t assume that because it falls within a month of Christmas that it’s more important than other Jewish holidays.
That said, it is still a Jewish holiday so it’s really adding insult to injury to have this retcon take place when it did.
