Magneto and Polaris Art by Adamantis
With the awful retcon last Wednesday, I really wish Wanda and Pietro were in this now. But, that doesn’t change that it’s an awesome picture and I greatly enjoy it.

you know i actually like to think that magneto, regardless, would be a feminist/social justice activist cause that makes me RLY HAPPY INSIDE but another part of me is like “if they’re not mutants he proooobably wouldn’t give a shit about them” and then another part of me is like “but it would also be totally within his character to seek out and destroy oppression wherever he sees it”
if both charles and erik were ladies it’d just make everything better cause charles would be better at relating to/not patronizing or controlling raven, and erik would just be thE BIGGEST MOST ANGRY FEMINIST plus charles would be hella cute and cuddly and erik would be one of those ladies that’s like “if you punched me i would say thank you”
“if Magneto was a girl he’d be a Feminist”
Hello? Polaris anyone!?
Damn right.
It’s been pointed out by Lorna fans better than me that Polaris was created and introduced as a very strong female character, stronger than Jean Grey at the time. There were a lot of elements to her original introduction and use that could have developed into her becoming something of a feminist icon.
Unfortunately, she got dismantled entirely during the long Claremont run. It’s only in the past decade and a half that she’s REALLY started to show her stuff. The thanks goes to a mix of Peter David picking up the pieces of her in the early 90s, and later Milligan and Austen making great use of her, particularly in relation to Genosha and Magneto.

Just another case of me not wanting to live on this planet anymore. And I’m going to address false comparisons here for a moment because people can’t seem to grasp the concept. False comparison is taking two none comparable things and…comparing them. An example of this is the new Thor who is a woman, and the retcon of the Twins pasts. “But those are totally the same!” Except not. Both money grabbing ploys? Sure. Just looking for some scandal? You bet. But as far as the characters and fans are concerned they are totally different cases. Thor temporarily not having his hammer is something that has happened before and doesn’t change who he is or his past. Just makes him sad. This is a forward directional story telling. From a point forward things will be different. That is storytelling. You don’t have to like it, but it’s relatively harmless. What isn’t harmless and vastly different than Thor losing his hammer is changing backstory. To reboot or retcon a story is to take away what we had. To change what we loved. To make it so we can’t read those other stories because it casts a different light on every interaction those characters ever had. And it hurts. You can still read an old Thor run with his hammer. You will eventually read a new Thor run with his hammer. That is not the case with the twins. Reading stories about them and Magneto are now no longer what they were when we grew up. I cannot dress as Wanda without people asking “did you know, did you see, what do you think..” About this reboot. It hurts to look at my shelves of M family stuff. It hurts to watch the Wolverine and the Xmen cartoon. Their future’s weren’t changed, it was their pasts. And with that our pasts. Reboots hurt worse than deaths. Deaths can be undone. Retcones are rarely able to be negated. A fair comparison would be like being told the original 151 pokemon were not pokemon. They were something else. They are no longer included in future games as pokemon, but don’t worry, if you like them you can go back and play the old games and pretend they are still pokemon. Does that sound like something you can do? Just pretend?Act like that taint of knowledge doesn’t harm your memories? It does
Very well said.
I don’t like the use of violent language either, but I think people are just venting when they say they want to punch someone, and stuff like that.
For the record, I’m strongly against the use of physical violence, and I believe boycotts remain the best way to protest against entertainment decisions that offend us.
That’s what he always does – makes jokes about the fans’ concerns.
Okay, I see why he can’t give us answers yet; he wants people to keep buying Axis and buy Uncanny Avengers to know what will happen*. But there are better ways to handle this than just indirectly saying “f*ck you”. We all know this changes are about MCU synergy, there’s no point in denying that anymore. If Brevoort and the others need to hide this like a dirty secret, well, it tells you all you need to know about how “story comes first”…
*I won’t be buying Axis and Uncanny Avengers (or any other Avengers comics, for that matter, not Inhuman). If you want to know what happens but would rather not waste your money on the further assassination of your favorite characters, don’t worry, Tumblr is sure to keep you updated on this mess.
reblog if you want to retcon reality so me and fuckyeahwandamaximoff are sisters.
he did the same crap back when he was questioned as to why Lorna swasn’t in Children’s Crusade the follow up to House of M a story she was part of and he started writing crap like “Lorna shouldn’t be part of Magneto’s family” yes please tell me why, tell me why the character who is basically Magneto Jr but smarter shouldn’t be part of the family? it angers me when people say that because what they’re saying is they liked it when Lorna had her family ties removed to be the shadow of Alex Summers.
He’s basically a Politician.
More specifically, when Avengers vs X-Men was happening, there were two specific things Brevoort said to blow off and denigrate Lorna as part of the Magnus family.
The first thing he did was try to come up with some convoluted half-baked excuse about mutant powers “breeding true” to justify the idea that Lorna having magnetic powers like her father is wrong and means he can’t be her father, but at the same time Banshee being Siryn’s father works perfectly. I’m not just using Siryn and Banshee as my own example, he specifically used them in his argument. Likely because even he knew how fake his argument was and how much his response could tick off so, so many X-Men fans if he didn’t come up with “exceptions.”
The second thing he did, before AvX got underway, was respond to demands for Lorna taking part in the event (her family was heavily involved and she was strongly affected by Decimation, after all) by saying she wasn’t important enough to deserve to take part. He outright said the event was only for A and B-listers, no others need apply, meaning 1) he considers Lorna below B-list, and 2) Marvel cares more about how “popular” a character is than how well they fit the story. Lorna was eventually added into AvX after all… as a nameless cameo that interacts so little with her family that Magneto, who had just gone out into space to help rescue her a month ago, completely ignores Emma Frost mind-controlling her into submission.
I don’t know how much blame Brevoort deserves for this awful retcon. He might love it because it frees him from the X-Men franchise, or he might hate it but have to follow it due to orders from above him. However, we can very safely say that nothing he says is worth anything when it comes to cases like this. He’ll say whatever it takes to weasel out of the situation.

I’m fairly new to the Marvel universe, so I haven’t been keeping up with this “Axis” crossover storyline. From what I have gleaned from the brief explanations I got from a particularly chatty customer in a local comic shop, it’s a little hokey. Red Skull (a Literal Nazi) steals the brain of the recently deceased Charles Xavier (the most powerful telepathic mutant in this universe) and essentially performs brain surgery on himself to give himself psychic powers and wage a psychic war on every mutant on earth. Being a Literal Nazi, this is ostensibly out of a need for racial and genetic purity, because when you’re a Nazi Eugenics NEVER go out of style.
That’s the storyline as far as I understand it. Then some other stuff happened? Magneto and his kids got involved? What happened next was, if I may speak frankly, a big ol’ bucket of horseshit.
Excellent points. I would just like to add one “fun” detail: at least three of the Jewish Marvel characters on that list linked above are currently dead (or literally ceased to exist).
they did this for the copyright – which means, they’re probably never going to undo it like they did so much more stuff in the marvel universe. this is bullshit. i’m so fucking angry.
Hit them at their bottom line. That’s the only way they’ll see and feel it. They don’t care about dropped sales in the comics, so focus on the films and/or other Disney properties. Don’t limit just to Marvel if you feel up for it. No matter who made the decision, you can bet the suits at the top at the very least condone this behavior if they didn’t outright demand that it happen. Every little bit counts.
Maybe they’ll fix this idiocy. Maybe they won’t. But whether they do or don’t, they can still be made to suffer some consequences for showing such disrespect toward fans and the source material itself.
