This is a post about goings-on with my fics. Currently not including links to the fics because this is purely discussion. I’m not linking to anything this time, but I might in the future.
I posted my “Special Assignment” StarCraft II and “Pot-Smokin’ Polaris” fics to Hentai-Foundry and adultfanfiction.net earlier this week. I also posted a couple old Halloween Grab bag fics to adultfanfiction.net.
“Special Assignment” is a more traditional pornographic fanfic about Kate Lockwell getting forced to do a special report for a sexist bar, with nudity, humiliation, etc. I felt uncomfortable with the original ending, so before posting, I added an ending set later that night where Kate not only enjoys it and flips it around into a dominant position, but uses the opportunity to demand legalization and more rights and respect for prostitutes and prostitution.
“Pot-Smokin’ Polaris” has absolutely no sex, no humiliation. The closest it has to pornographic content is coloring nipples. It’s purely Lorna Dane high off pot and being absurd, with a few plays on tidbits about the character.
The responses to each of those fics on the two sites have been very interesting.
On Hentai-Foundry, “Pot-Smokin’ Polaris” originally got downvoted and only has one comment on it which I wouldn’t really say is a review. It got 1 upvote (and 1 downvote) and has 1 fave, but that’s all. Meanwhile, “Special Assignment” got a review, got 2 upvotes, a review, and several faves.
The activity for both on adultfanfiction.net is the exact opposite. “Pot-Smokin’ Polaris” got two positive reviews, while “Special Assignment” got one 2-point downvote.
These two fics and the wildly differing reactions to them more or less confirm certain things I suspected about the two sites. Interest for fics on Hentai-Foundry is all about how much sexual content is involved; having a lot of sex matters more than anything else. By contrast, adultfanfiction.net’s readership isn’t willing to accept certain interests, kinks or fetishes. Anything fluffy and upbeat is okay, but readers will downvote and leave negative reviews for any fics that do things outside their own kink boundaries even if you give them fair warning about what’s in the story before they read it.
I have more fics in the works, so we’ll see how things shape up each time.
